Capital City Trail

The Capital City Trail is a 29.8km sealed loop around inner Melbourne, following the Yarra, Moonee Ponds Creek, Merri Creek and the old rail corridors back to where it started. It is flat, almost entirely off road, and it crosses several council boundaries on the way, which matters more for dog owners than the distance does. AllTrails rates the full loop moderate and logs it around six and a half hours on foot, but almost nobody walks it in one go with a dog.

Pick a section instead. The Yarra stretch through Abbotsford and Richmond is the shadiest, Royal Park is the greenest, and the Docklands and Southbank sections are hard surfaces with sun and crowds. Access points are everywhere, including Flinders Street, Southern Cross and Richmond stations, so a one way section walk with a train home is the sensible way to use it. The Main Yarra Trail and the Merri Creek Trail both feed into it if you want to extend.

Leash status

No single authority manages the whole trail. City of Melbourne, City of Yarra and Parks Victoria each control different sections, and the strictest rule on any given stretch is the one that applies. In the City of Melbourne everything is on lead by default. Beyond that, dogs must be leashed within five metres of a shared path, and within twenty metres of a river, creek or waterbody, a playground or outdoor fitness area, a permanent barbecue or picnic area, or a sports field during organised sport. Since the trail is a shared path that follows waterways for most of its length, those two rules alone put your dog on lead for effectively the entire route. There are also designated areas inside Royal Park where dogs are prohibited at all times, so read the signage rather than assuming green space means access.

Water and hazards

Drinking fountains are common along the busier sections and thin out on the creek corridors, so carry water for the quieter legs. The Yarra is not a swim: it is a shared urban waterway with variable quality, and the twenty metre leash rule applies to it anyway. The real hazard is bikes and e-scooters. Weekday mornings before nine and evenings after five are commuter peak on this path, and commuter cyclists move fast and quietly, so keep the lead short and your dog on the left. The Docklands sections are exposed and the surface holds summer heat.

Getting there and parking

The trail touches most of the inner city rail network, so pick a station and walk to it. By car, there is paid parking at Southbank and Docklands and limited free street parking near the suburban stretches.

When to go

Mid morning on a weekday, between the two commuter peaks. This is a good trail for big runners who need distance without hills, and for senior dogs, since a flat sealed surface and a train station every few kilometres means you can stop whenever you like.

Close by with the dogs

For an actual run, Royal Park at MacArthur Road is right on the route, and North Melbourne Recreation Reserve and Quarries Park are both a short detour. Point Park at Docklands is off lead on a timetable only, evenings and early mornings, so check before you rely on it.
