Royal Park (MacArthur Road) Dog Off Leash Area

Royal Park's MacArthur Road off-leash area is a large, unfenced stretch of open grass and scrubland south of MacArthur Road in Parkville, open around the clock. It is one of the biggest off-leash spaces close to the Melbourne CBD, sitting inside the city's largest park, with room to actually run rather than circle a small enclosure.

The dog setup

The off-leash zone covers the open grassland outside the internal circular path, which stays on lead, and dogs are prohibited from the Australian Native Garden within the park. Because the area is unfenced and borders MacArthur Road, reliable recall is the entry requirement here. Council bins are provided and owners are expected to use them.

Mature trees give shade over open grass ovals, but there are no water taps in the off-leash area itself, so bring a bowl and bottle, more so on warm days. Public toilets sit nearby in the broader park, and the tram lines put the grassland within easy reach for owners without a car.

Weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are quietest, while Saturday mornings and weekday early evenings draw the biggest crowds, though the sheer size means dogs still spread out rather than bunch up.

Royal Park's native grassland and remnant vegetation make the setting feel properly bushy for an inner-city run, and the on-lead paths through the broader park are worth adding on if you want distance. Keep dogs out of the planted garden beds and give the wetlands a respectful buffer.
