Tom's Dog Park is a naturalistic off-leash area within Royal Park at 154 Gatehouse Street, Parkville. The single reason to make the trip: it is an informal, open stretch of mature trees and long grass inside one of Melbourne's largest park precincts, giving energetic dogs genuine room to run rather than a tight fenced pad.
The rules. Dogs can be off-leash but must be under voice control at all times. Because Royal Park zones can shift, always read the signage at the entry points before unclipping. There are no separate fenced areas for small and large dogs, so your dog needs to be socialised and reliable on recall in an open, unbounded setting.
Getting there and what is around. Street parking near Gatehouse Street is limited and gets tighter on weekends when local sport fills Royal Park. The closest train is Royal Park Station on the Upfield Line, a short walk away. For a post-walk coffee, Cafe Tesorina is in Parkville itself, and Zagame's House in Carlton is a pet-friendly stay a short drive away.

Aim for mid-week mornings or late weekday afternoons for a calmer visit, as weekends and weekday evenings draw regular crowds. Good for well-socialised dogs with dependable recall.
