Tom's Dog Park

Tom's Dog Park is the naturalistic off-leash corner of Royal Park at 154 Gatehouse Street, Parkville. The draw is not fencing or equipment, it is room: an open stretch of mature trees and long grass inside one of Melbourne's largest park precincts, where a dog with working lungs can actually cover ground.

The dog setup

This is an unfenced, open-style area, so it runs entirely on your dog's training. Off-leash is allowed but your dog must stay under effective voice control the whole time, and you must carry a lead even while your dog runs free. Read the signage at the entry points before you unclip, because zones within Royal Park shift, and there are marked restrictions around the native garden and grassland regeneration areas that dogs must stay out of.

There are no separate small and large dog sections, so the whole space is mixed. A water fountain with a dog-height basin and scattered benches cover the basics. Wheelchair-accessible paths lead in from Gatehouse Street.

Max: no fences and long grass means I vanish to the ears, so recall training gets tested every visit.

Worth knowing

Mid-week mornings and late weekday afternoons are the calm windows; weekends and weekday evenings pull the regular crowd. The park suits well-socialised dogs with dependable recall rather than a first-time off-leash graduate. Native wildlife and plantings share the precinct, so a dog that respects boundaries gets the best run of it.

Getting there and parking

Street parking along Gatehouse Street is free but timed, and it tightens on weekends when local sport fills Royal Park and the hospital precincts push overflow parking into the side streets. Poplar Road around the medical precinct is the backup. Public transport is genuinely easy: Royal Park Station on the Upfield line is a short walk, and trams along Flemington Road and Royal Parade stop nearby.

Close by with the dogs

The Royal Park MacArthur Road Dog Off Leash Area is the other off-leash pocket of the same precinct if you want a change of scenery without moving the car, and Cafe Tesorina in Parkville does the coffee stop after. For an overnight with the dog, Zagame's House in Carlton is a pet-friendly stay a short drive away.
