Clayton Reserve

Clayton Reserve is the inner-city dog park on Macaulay Road, right on the North Melbourne and Kensington border: fully fenced, open 24/7, and one of the busiest dog parks in this part of Melbourne. Secured gates, a grass and sand mix underfoot and enough running room for social dogs make it a daily habit for the local crowd.

The dog setup

Off-leash runs 24 hours a day inside the fenced area, but the lead goes back on the moment you step outside it, including on the surrounding paths. City of Melbourne rules also keep dogs on-lead within 20 metres of playgrounds, barbecues or organised sport nearby. Inside the fence there is a shelter for shade and rain, seating and a picnic table, dog water, bag dispensers and bins, plus improved lighting for evening visits.

Worth knowing

The gate line itself is the one soft spot, and regulars will tell you to keep a hand on the latch while you swap a boisterous dog in or out, especially in the after-work rush. Winter turns the high-traffic patches to mud, which is the park's one real complaint. Being this close to the city, you are trading scenery for convenience: a working dog park with a crowd that mostly knows the etiquette.

Max: it is unfenced right at the gate line, so manage the handover before you unclip. Five in the evening is chaos hour here.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at 494 Macaulay Road. Street parking along Macaulay Road is usually manageable outside peak times, but this is a walk-or-ride park: Kensington station on the Craigieburn line is a short walk away, and the Route 57 tram stops nearby.

When to go

Early morning before 8am and the mid-morning lull between 11am and 3pm are the calmest windows. Weekday evenings from 5pm and weekend mornings bring the biggest crowds, so a nervous dog is better served in the quiet stretches.
