North Melbourne Recreation Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

The dog off-leash area at North Melbourne Recreation Reserve wraps the historic Arden Street Oval, giving inner-city dogs a big stretch of flat open grass to run. The catch is access: under City of Melbourne rules dogs go off lead only when no sport is on, and the ground is completely unfenced, opening straight onto Arden, Macaulay and Fogarty streets.

The dog setup

Off lead applies around the main oval outside of training, practice or matches, with dogs kept under effective voice control the whole time. Carry a lead of up to 3 metres on your person and be ready to clip it straight back on, because off-lead ends within 20 metres of barbecues, picnic areas, playgrounds or a field in active use.

With no perimeter fence, this is a recall-tested space. A dog that bolts toward traffic has roads on three sides, so treat it as a training ground rather than a release valve.

A working community oval rather than a landscaped dog park, with North Melbourne locals filtering in around sport fixtures. Check the ground first on game days, since match days shut the off-lead use down entirely.

Max: check for footballers training before you unclip. The oval serves its club first, and the dog access is what is left over.

Getting there and parking

Metered street parking runs along Macaulay Road and Fogarty Street, and the Route 57 tram stops close by. There is a public water tap in the reserve, so bring a bowl, and public toilets sit within the precinct. No bag dispensers on site, so pack your own.

If your dog needs a fence, the Clayton Reserve dog park nearby and the Eades Park Fenced Dog Park in West Melbourne are the enclosed alternatives. The Royal Park off-leash area in Parkville is the bigger open-space option north.
