Eades Park Fenced Dog Park

Eades Park Fenced Dog Park is a small, fully enclosed off-leash space on Eades Place in West Melbourne, hemmed in by the high-rise apartments around King and Stanley Streets. For inner-city dogs that need a secure run without a drive to the suburbs, it is one of the handiest options in the City of Melbourne.

The dog setup

The enclosure is entirely off-leash once you are through the double-gate system: leash up outside, close the first gate before opening the second, and reverse the process on the way out. Inside, dogs can run off lead, but they stay under your control and in sight at all times, with bins and bag dispensers on hand for cleanup.

The ground mixes grass, sand and mulch, with logs, rocks and garden beds for sniffing, a drinking fountain with a dog bowl, and bench seating for owners. It is a long, narrow space rather than a wide field, so fetch is vertical down the middle rather than sprawling. The wider reserve around it has a children's playground and outdoor exercise equipment, both off limits to dogs.

The vibe

Expect apartment locals with city dogs on a short morning or evening circuit rather than destination visitors. It is open around the clock, and the compact footprint means you will usually cross paths with someone, so a dog that copes with company does best. Solid recall helps anywhere, but the double gates and fencing make this a reasonable pick for recall practice.

Getting there

The park sits between Eades Place, King Street and Stanley Street. Flagstaff station is a short walk, trams along William Street and Elizabeth Street get you close, and street parking nearby is tight, as you would expect this close to the CBD. Allow extra time if you are driving.

Close by with the dogs

Cafes with outdoor seating cluster around Victoria Street a few minutes away. For more secure runs, North Melbourne Recreation Reserve and Clayton Reserve are both close, and the Capital City Trail passes nearby for an on-leash leg-stretcher.
