JJ Holland Park Dog Off Leash Area

JJ Holland Park is a large urban open space in Kensington, about 5km from the Melbourne CBD and managed by City of Melbourne, with a dedicated off-leash area across open grass. The single reason to make the trip is sheer space: few inner-city off-leash spots give you this much room to work a ball thrower without landing on someone's picnic.

The dog setup

This is an open-plan, partially fenced park, so effective voice control is the rule rather than a suggestion. The main sports ovals and the open grass to the east, between the Bill Vanina Pavilion and the playground, are the off-leash zones. Dogs stay on-leash in the extreme sports precinct and on the path networks, are kept at least 10 metres from play equipment and BBQ areas, and are not permitted on the synthetic field or inside the fenced playground grounds. Poo bags and bins are provided on site.

The vibe

The park packs a lot in: sports ovals, a basketball court, the Venny adventure playground, plus a skate park and BMX pump track on the western side. Drinking fountains with integrated dog bowls sit near the playground, with more taps through the sports precinct, and picnic tables, BBQs and toilets make it an easy full-family stop. Weekday mid-morning and early afternoon are the quiet windows; avoid weekend mornings and the 5 to 6:30pm weekday rush if your dog prefers space.

Getting there and parking

Free unrestricted street parking runs along Childers Street, though it tightens during weekend sports fixtures. The park is a short walk from either Kensington or Macaulay stations on the Craigieburn line, and buses along the Epsom Road corridor serve the edges. The grass turns muddy after heavy rain, so plan the paw-cleaning routine before you leave home.
