Fairbairn Park Dog Off Leash Area

Fairbairn Park is Ascot Vale's biggest dog space, a long run of flat sports ovals beside the Maribyrnong River where dogs can go off-leash any time organised sport is not being played. For sheer galloping room in Melbourne's inner north-west, it is hard to beat.

The rules. The ovals are off-leash except during scheduled matches and training, when dogs must be leashed and off the playing surface. Moonee Valley Council requires effective control at all times, meaning your dog stays in sight and comes back on command. Leash up within 15 metres of the playgrounds, barbecues and exercise equipment, in the car parks, along the river trail and in the southern section near the golf driving range.

What's there. Water fountains with dog bowls at ground level, free poo-bag dispensers with red bins for the used ones, toilet blocks at both ends of the park, covered picnic tables and free electric barbecues. Two playgrounds (north end and south-east corner) carry the 15-metre leash buffer. Shade is thin out on the ovals themselves.

The water. The river runs the length of the park and plenty of dogs swim, but the banks are muddy and can be slippery, and this stretch is tidal, so the entry points change through the day.

Getting there. The park sits off Woods Street with free parking along Newsom Street and the surrounding residential streets. Ascot Vale station on the Craigieburn line is the closest train, and the Maribyrnong River Trail runs straight past, so walking or cycling in with the dog is easy.

Nearby with the dogs. Middle Child on Maribyrnong Road handles the post-park coffee, Jimmy's Tap & Barrel on Union Road takes the late shift, and Aberfeldie Park upstream gives you a second off-leash stop along the same river trail.

Weekday mid-mornings are the quiet window; weekend mornings and training evenings are the crush. In summer go early or late, because the middle of the ovals offers next to no shade. Good for big runners that need real distance, less ideal for dogs with shaky recall near an unfenced river.
