Thompson Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Thompson Reserve sits on the escarpment above Pipemakers Park at 32 Van Ness Avenue, Maribyrnong, and it is the local off-leash favourite thanks to open grass, river valley views and a genuine dog agility setup rather than just a fenced paddock.

The rules: Dogs need to be under effective voice or hand control at all times, and a lead must be carried even while your dog is running off-leash. Keep dogs leashed on the paths approaching the reserve and in the surrounding streets, only let them off once you are inside the designated area, and pick up and bin all waste.

What's there: There is dedicated dog agility equipment, a sheltered seating area for owners, and the eight-metre "Pipedreams" sculpture by Matthew Harding as a landmark. The council upgraded the fencing recently, though some visitors note it is not fully secure everywhere, so dogs with patchy recall should still be watched closely near the boundary.

Getting there: The reserve is on Van Ness Avenue with free street parking nearby, an easy option if you are driving. By public transport, buses running along Farnsworth Avenue and Raleigh Road stop within a short uphill walk.

Weekday mornings before work, late afternoons and Saturday mornings draw the biggest crowds since this is a popular local social hub. For a quieter run, aim for the middle of the day midweek. The reserve is open and exposed with little shade, so bring water for your dog in summer.
