Martin Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Martin Reserve Fenced Dog Park is a fully fenced off-leash park on the corner of Essex Street and Blandford Street in West Footscray, roughly 130 by 100 metres, with a double-gated entry system so dogs cannot bolt out while you are getting the leash off.

The rules: Off-leash is fine anywhere inside the fenced perimeter, but dogs must be back on lead the moment you step outside the gates. Keep voice control over your dog, clean up immediately, and remove an aggressive dog from the park straight away. Supervise kids closely if they come along, since it is an open shared space rather than a dedicated kids' area.

What's there: Grass covers most of the park with some bare patches and gravel paths, and mature trees give useful shade. There are water taps with bowls, doggy bag bins at both entrances, a few low bluestone walls dogs like to hop on, and occasionally a sand pit. A separate area caters to small or nervous dogs, and there is sheltered seating near the Blandford Street entrance.

Getting there: Street parking is generally easy to find on both Essex and Blandford Streets. It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk from West Footscray Station if you are coming by train.

When to go: Weekday afternoons from about 4:30pm to 6:30pm and weekend mornings from 9am to 11am draw the biggest crowds. Weekday mornings or early afternoon are quieter if your dog needs more space. It gets dusty in summer and can turn muddy in winter, so a towel in the car is worth it either way.
