Footscray Park Dog Off Leash Area

Footscray Park's off-leash area is a wide, unfenced lawn on the park's western side, running down toward the Maribyrnong River near the Thomson Water Garden. It is open grass with river views rather than a manicured dog park, and there is no fence between you and the water, which shapes exactly who it suits.

The dog setup

Maribyrnong council rules apply here: dogs off-lead must stay in sight and under effective voice or hand control, no more than about 50 metres from you, and you must carry a lead at all times. Leash up within five metres of the riverside trail, keep dogs 30 metres clear of the playground, and note dogs are barred from the sporting grounds whenever a match or training session is booked. One bag station sits near the boat club corner and bins are thin elsewhere on the lawn, so carry spares.

Worth knowing

There is no dedicated dog drinking fountain and shade is sparse in summer, so bring water and time hot days for the cooler hours. This suits confident dogs with solid recall in open space; a dog that needs a fence should head elsewhere.

Max: the river is right there, but this is not a patrolled swimming spot. Keep a reactive dog on lead near the bank and judge the water access yourself.

Getting there

The park fronts Ballarat Road, with street parking along Ballarat Road and in the streets off Footscray Road. Several bus routes run along Ballarat Road, and it is an easy walk from the surrounding streets.

Close by with the dogs

The Maribyrnong River Trail and Burndap Park continues the riverside walking from the park, and Martin Reserve Fenced Dog Park in West Footscray is the fully fenced alternative. Moon Dog Wild West is a dog-friendly brewery option for afterwards.
