Eastern Reserve Dog Park

Eastern Reserve Dog Park is a compact, fully fenced off-leash run on Park Street in South Melbourne, just south of the South Melbourne Market. It is small and well lit, which makes it a dependable city leg-stretch rather than a long gallop ground, and it particularly suits smaller dogs and quick after-work visits.

The dog setup

The fenced northern section of Eastern Reserve is the designated off-leash area; the southern part of the reserve across Park Street is a general park with a playground and basketball ring, where dogs stay on lead. Eastern Reserve is open around the clock, but the dog park gates are typically locked outside roughly 7am to 8pm, so plan around that window.

The gates are single, not a double airlock, so hold your dog steady on the way in and out. If another dog is charging the fence as you arrive, wait for a clear moment before opening it. Owners supervise at all times, and underfoot is a mix of grass and granular sand that drains well after rain.

The vibe

Early morning and late afternoon are the social peaks, and because the space is compact it fills fast. Nervous or small dogs do best in the midday lulls. There is a drinking-water tap with a bowl, waste bags and bins, benches for owners, some tree shade, and lighting that keeps the park usable after dark. Sections of lawn are occasionally fenced off for grass regeneration, which shrinks an already small yard.

Getting there and parking

The park sits near the corner of Park and Cecil Streets, an easy walk from central South Melbourne. Trams run along the nearby Park Street and Clarendon Street routes. Street parking exists close by but tightens up around market days.

Close by with the dogs

Albert Park Lake is a short walk south for a longer leashed loop afterwards, and the Albert Park Dog Off Leash Area offers more room to run. Gasworks Arts Park adds another off-leash option, and Halcyon Days on Victoria Avenue is a coffee stop with outdoor tables.
