Port Melbourne Dog Beach

Port Melbourne Dog Beach runs the sand between the Port Melbourne Yacht Club and Lagoon Pier, on the front beach off Beach Street. It is a flat, open stretch of foreshore with shallow, calm bay water, city skyline views across Port Phillip Bay and easy tram access, which makes it one of the more convenient off-leash swims close to the CBD.

The dog setup

The rules are seasonal and worth getting right. Winter, from 1 April to 31 October, is off-leash at all times on the sand. Summer, from 1 November to 31 March, is off-leash only between 7.30pm and 10am, and on-leash the rest of the day, with penalties applying during peak summer hours.

Dogs must be on-leash on all paths and boardwalks and when leaving the sand. Council bag dispensers and bins sit near the access points, with public toilets and a water tap close by and bench seating along the path above the sand.

The vibe

The calm water is the draw here: shallow and gentle, good for small dogs and swimmers still learning. Low tide opens up more sand for running, while high tide narrows the usable strip, so check the tide before you promise your dog a big swim.

Pepsi: if your dog is a nervous swimmer, aim for low tide and the winter months when the whole beach is off-leash and there is space to take it slow.

It is an urban beach, so expect the dog walking crowd that comes with a bayside suburb ten minutes from the city, plus cyclists along the Bay Trail behind the sand.

Getting there and parking

By car, come in via Beach Street or The Esplanade; street parking is limited and paid options nearby fill fast on summer weekends, so arrive before 9am or come in the evening. By tram, take the 109 towards Port Melbourne and walk five to ten minutes from the Station Pier end.

Close by with the dogs

Bay Street, a short walk away, has a run of cafes with outdoor tables that take dogs, with Jack the Geezer further along the bay in Middle Park. St Kilda Harbour Dog Beach is the next dog beach down the coast, and the Bay Trail links the whole stretch for an on-lead warm-up.
