St Kilda Harbour Dog Beach

St Kilda Harbour Dog Beach is a compact off-leash sand stretch along the St Kilda Foreshore, sitting between Brooks Jetty and the northern end of the St Kilda Marina car park. Its single defining draw is the shallow, calm harbour water that lets dogs swim and socialise within easy reach of central Melbourne.

The rules. Off-leash access is seasonal. From 1 November to 31 March, dogs may run off-leash on the designated stretch at the north-west end of Pier Rd. From 1 April to 31 October, off-leash access extends across most of the adjacent foreshore sands. Dogs are prohibited at all times in the environmentally sensitive dune area between Pier Road and West Beach Pavilion - respect the signage and keep clear. Dogs must be under effective voice control at all times, even when off-leash. The foreshore walking and cycling path is on-leash only, so clip on before you leave the sand.

The water and terrain. The beach is natural sand with a gentle slope into shallow harbour water, making entry easy for dogs of all sizes. There is little to no natural shade on the beach itself, so plan around sun exposure on hot days. At high tide the usable sand narrows significantly; low to mid-tide maximises the running area.

What's there. Amenities on the beach itself are minimal. Waste bags and bins are typically provided near the car park area. Public toilets and a large paid car park sit immediately adjacent. There is no fencing - the beach is open to the foreshore path on one side and the water on the other.

Getting there. Paid parking is available at the marina or along Pier Road, though it fills quickly on warm weekends. The Route 96 tram runs to the Acland St terminus, followed by a short walk. Buses along Beaconsfield Parade offer another option. Cyclists and pedestrians can use the foreshore path - dogs on lead only.

Watch-outs. Neighbouring marina boat traffic and kitesurfers operate just outside the designated area, so keep dogs clear of the marina channel. Hot sand is a real issue in summer - go early or late. The narrow high-tide sand can push dogs closer together, which matters if yours needs space.

Nearby with the dogs. For an off-leash park alternative, Peanut Farm Reserve offers fenced-style open space a short walk inland. Dog-friendly food and drink options are plentiful along the foreshore - Dogs Bar and SALIS cafe both welcome dogs in their outdoor areas.

When to go. Weekday mornings are the quietest window, with the most sand exposed at low tide. Avoid weekend afternoons in summer if your dog dislikes crowds. Good for social swimmers and dogs that thrive in a lively, mixed-group setting.
