St Kilda Beach Dog Off Leash Area

St Kilda's main dog beach runs along Beaconsfield Parade at St Kilda West between Pier Road and the West Beach Pavilion, and it is one of the most forgiving off-leash beaches in inner Melbourne. Shallow, calm water and an easy stretch of sand suit timid swimmers as much as confident ones.

The dog setup

The St Kilda West stretch is a year-round, 24-hour off-leash zone under the City of Port Phillip, which is rare: most of the municipality's foreshore carries summer time limits. Dogs must stay under effective voice control, you must carry a leash at all times, and the lead goes back on before your dog leaves the sand for the promenade or paths.

The dune and native grass conservation areas behind the beach are off-limits to dogs at all times, so keep to the sand below the dune line. Waste bins sit at the access points along the promenade and a drinking tap is usually available near the beach entrances, but shade is scarce, so bring your own on hot days along with a bowl.

Worth knowing

Pepsi: the water stays shallow a long way out, so this is the beach for building up a nervous swimmer's confidence a few metres at a time.

A second off-leash option sits on the foreshore south of Brooks Jetty near St Kilda Marina. Off-leash boundaries and seasonal hours on the Port Phillip foreshore do change, so read the signage at the access point before unclipping, and council rangers actively patrol this foreshore.

Getting there and parking

The nearest address is Pier Road, St Kilda West. Paid ticketed parking runs along Beaconsfield Parade and side streets such as Cowderoy Street, and it fills fast on warm weekends. Trams on Fitzroy Street and Acland Street (routes 96, 12 and 16) leave a short walk, and the Bay Trail connects the beach on foot or by bike.

On hot days check the dry sand against your hand before a long walk, and watch the flagged swim zones near the pavilion in summer.
