St Kilda Beach Dog Off Leash Area

St Kilda's main dog beach runs along Beaconsfield Parade at St Kilda West, between Pier Road and the West Beach Pavilion. Shallow, calm water and an easy stretch of sand make it one of the more forgiving off-leash beaches in inner Melbourne, suiting timid swimmers as much as confident ones.

The rules. The St Kilda West stretch is the year-round off-leash zone. Dogs must be under effective voice control and you must carry a leash at all times. The dune areas of the St Kilda Foreshore Reserve are off-limits to dogs at all times, so keep to the sand below the dunes. A second off-leash option sits on the St Kilda Foreshore south of Brooks Jetty, near St Kilda Marina. Off-leash boundaries and seasonal hours on the Port Phillip foreshore do change, so check the council signage at the access point before you let your dog off.

What's there. Waste bins sit at the access points along the promenade, and a drinking tap is usually available near the beach entrances. Natural shade is limited, so bring your own on hot days, along with a water bowl.

Getting there. The nearest address is Pier Road, St Kilda West. Paid ticketed parking runs along Beaconsfield Parade and the side streets such as Cowderoy Street, and it fills fast on warm weekends. Trams on Fitzroy Street and Acland Street (routes 96, 12 and 16) drop you a short walk away, and the Bay Trail connects the beach on foot or by bike.

Watch-outs. Keep clear of the fenced dune and conservation zones between Pier Road and the West Beach Pavilion. On hot days the dry sand heats up, so check it against your hand before a long walk.

Nearby with the dogs. The West Beach Pavilion sits right on the dog beach, and Republica at the St Kilda Sea Baths welcomes dogs in its beachfront outdoor area. Cowderoy Street has a couple of dog-friendly cafes a block back from the sand.

When to go. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are quietest. Low tide opens up more sand for running. Sunset is lovely but draws crowds, so come earlier if your dog prefers space.
