St Kilda West Dog Beach

St Kilda West Dog Beach is a dedicated off-leash stretch along Beaconsfield Parade, sitting between the West Beach Pavilion and Pier Road. The single reason to make the trip: wide sandbars and shallow water that let dogs swim and run hard without competing with the crowds on St Kilda's main swimming beaches.

The rules. From 1 April to 31 October, dogs are permitted off-leash across all beaches in the City of Port Phillip, including this one. From 1 November to 31 March, summer restrictions kick in, typically requiring dogs on-leash or limiting access to certain time windows. Check the council page before you go in warmer months, as the exact conditions shift season to season. Dogs are prohibited at all times in the dune area of the St Kilda Foreshore Reserve between Pier Road and West Beach Pavilion, which borders the off-leash stretch. Regardless of season, dogs must remain on a lead within 20 metres of any children's playground, public BBQ, or exercise equipment.

The water and terrain. The beach is sandy with shallow water and exposed sandbars, making it genuinely dog-friendly for swimming. Low tide is when the space opens up: more sand, more bars, more room to run. Check local tide times before heading out. High tide compresses the usable beach significantly.

What's there. Rubbish bins and dog waste bag dispensers sit along the foreshore. The West Beach Pavilion sits directly on the beach with a dog-friendly deck if you want a coffee or a meal without leaving the area. Natural shade is limited, so bring your own water and a bowl, particularly on warmer days.

Getting there. By car, head along Beaconsfield Parade, with the beach roughly opposite the intersection with Langridge St. Paid parking lines the beach side of Beaconsfield Parade, and some free parking exists on residential side streets. Both fill quickly on weekends. Tram 12 (stop 141) and tram 16 (stop 135) both reach the beach area.

Watch-outs. Saturday afternoons and Sundays are the busiest periods, and the sand directly in front of the pavilion gets congested first. If it is packed, walk further along the foreshore to find open space. Sand can get hot in summer, and shade is scarce. The dune zone is an environmental exclusion area, not a soft guideline.

Nearby with the dogs. If the wind is wrong or the tide is high, St Kilda Beach Dog Off Leash Area offers another foreshore option nearby. For an off-beach run, Peanut Farm Reserve Dog Off Leash Area provides open grass. Afterward, Dogs Bar is a long-standing dog-friendly pub for a post-walk drink.

When to go. Early morning is the sweet spot, cooler sand, thinner crowds, and calmer dogs. Aim for a falling or low tide to get the full sandbar run. Good for confident swimmers and big runners who need space to stretch out.
