Elwood Beach Dog Off Leash Area

Elwood Beach Dog Off-Leash Area is a wide sandy bay beach on Ormond Esplanade, with the designated dog zone running between the rock groyne south of Point Ormond and the rock groyne in front of the Elwood Angling Club. The calm, shallow water of Port Phillip Bay is the draw: easy paddling and safe socialising rather than surf.

The rules

Off-leash access is seasonal, so the date matters. From 1 April to 31 October, dogs are allowed on the designated sand at all times. From 1 November to 31 March over summer, dogs are only permitted on the sand during restricted hours, roughly 7:30pm to 10am, with the busy middle of the day off limits.

The zone matters as much as the season: dogs are not allowed on the sand anywhere else along Elwood Beach at any time of year. Voice control applies, carry a leash, and check the City of Port Phillip signage at the foreshore before letting your dog go.

The water

Port Phillip Bay stays shallow a long way out here, making it a kind spot for dogs still learning to swim. Low tide exposes more firm sand for running. There is no surf to fight, which suits gentle swimmers and older dogs.

What's there

Fresh water taps, public toilets on the foreshore, bins and picnic tables back the beach, and a paved walking and bike path runs parallel to the sand. The Bay Trail passes straight through, so the beach links easily to St Kilda and Brighton on foot.

Getting there

Street parking runs along Ormond Esplanade but fills fast on sunny weekends. By public transport, the closest stations are Ripponlea and Elsternwick, each a 15 to 20 minute walk or a short bus ride away.

Watch-outs

Keep your dog inside the marked groyne-to-groyne zone, especially in summer when patrols are active, and mind the shared path for cyclists between swims. Weekend middays are the busiest stretch of people and dogs.

When to go

Early mornings before 9am are calmest, especially on weekends. Confirm the current seasonal window on the council dog beaches page before a summer visit.
