Sandown Street Beach

Sandown Street Beach is the standout on Brighton's bayside shoreline because it runs off-leash 24/7, year-round, inside a fenced and gated enclosure. That fence is the difference: most of Brighton's other dog stretches work on seasonal time windows, so here you get a secure run on shallow, calm bay water whenever you arrive.

The rules. Off-leash applies only inside the fenced Sandown Street area. On the paths and in the car park you must keep your dog on-leash, and the zone is patrolled with fines for dogs running loose outside it. Bins and bag dispensers sit at both gates, and the gate is quick-shutting, so mind it on the way in and out.

The water. Shallow across the sandbar and suitable for most dogs, with a deeper section towards the top. The beach stays accessible at any tide, though low tide opens up the most room to run.

What's there. Full fencing, dog waste bins and bag dispensers at each gate, and a kiosk and cafe nearby for a coffee afterwards.

Getting there. Parking sits at the end of Sandown Street and fills fast at peak times. North Brighton Station on the Sandringham line is a 10 to 15 minute walk, and buses run along Nepean Highway.

When to go. Weekday mornings and evenings are quietest; Sunday from late morning is the busiest. If your dog is new to off-leash beaches, come mid-week so they can find their feet without a crowd. Good for social dogs that like calm, shallow water.
