Brighton Beach Dog Off Leash Area

The Brighton Beach off-leash area is the open-sand stretch south of Dendy Street Beach in Melbourne's bayside, running past the bathing boxes towards Middle Brighton Pier. The catch is the calendar: this is a seasonal beach, off-leash around the clock through winter but locked behind dawn-and-dusk windows over summer, so the date and the hour decide whether your dog runs or sits this one out.

Leash status

Bayside Council enforces the summer window hard. From 1 November to 31 March, dogs are off-leash before 10am and after 7.30pm, and banned from the sand entirely between 10am and 7.30pm. From 1 April to 31 October it reverts to off-leash 24/7. Either way, keep your dog on-leash walking from the car park to the sand, keep them under effective voice control once off-leash, and pick up after them, because fines for fouling are steep.

Max: in summer the 10am cut-off is firm, not a suggestion. Roll in at 10.30 and you are looking at a fine, not a beach day.

Water and terrain

The going is mostly sand with some rocky patches and seaweed in sections, and there is no fencing anywhere. It suits dogs with reliable recall rather than bolters. At high tide the sand shrinks to narrow, stony strips; low tide gives you the room to run, and the calm bay water is an easy swim.

Getting there and parking

Paid parking sits in the Brighton Beach car park off Dendy Street. Brighton Beach Station on the Sandringham line is a short walk to the access point, and the Bay Trail coastal path links straight in for walkers and cyclists.

Worth knowing

Dog waste bins run along the paths and public toilets sit near the Dendy Street pavilion, with water fountains nearby, though bring your own on hot days. Weekend mornings in summer are the busiest window inside the legal off-leash hours, so the beach can feel crowded by 9am; winter spreads the same crowd over the whole day.

When to go

Low tide at sunrise in summer is the sweet spot for space and cool sand, well ahead of the 10am cut-off. Winter is the easy season here, with the full 24/7 window and far fewer people. If you are caught out mid-morning in summer, head inland rather than risking a fine.
