Sandringham Harbour Dog Beach

Sandringham Harbour Dog Beach is the calmer, more sheltered cousin of the busier Brighton and Hampton stretches, a sandy run on Bayside's foreshore where dogs swim, mooch and meet other dogs against a backdrop of the yacht club marina. It sits right below the Sandy Kiosk, so a coffee and a beach walk come as a package.

The rules

Bayside City Council lists this harbour stretch as a dedicated off-leash dog beach at all times, all year round, including through the summer restriction period when many other Bayside beaches tighten to morning-only windows. Your dog must stay under effective control at all times, and a leash should come with you anyway.

The status differs just outside the harbour: the main Sandringham Beach next door runs to summer time limits, so read the signs at whichever access point you use and keep your dog inside the marked zone. Pick up after your dog; bins and bags sit at the access points.

The water

The harbour setting means gentler, shallow water than the open-bay beaches, which suits cautious swimmers, waders and older dogs. The beach is fairly narrow, so low to mid tide gives the most usable sand, and at high tide dogs and walkers share a tighter strip.

What's there

The Sandy Kiosk sits right on the sand for coffee and a bite, and water bowls often appear along the foreshore path. The paved coastal trail runs behind the beach for an easy lead-on walk either way.

Max: the harbour zone and the main beach next door play by different summer rules, so check the sign at your entry point each visit rather than trusting last summer's memory.

Getting there

Access is off Beach Road via Jetty Road, Sandringham. There is a ticketed beach car park beside the yacht club and life saving club, plus limited free street parking nearby that fills fast on warm weekends. Sandringham Station, the end of the Sandringham line, is a short walk uphill.

Watch-outs

Boats and swimmers share this stretch, so keep dogs clear of the launching areas near the yacht club. The narrow high-tide strip is the other constraint, worth timing around.

When to go

Early morning is the sweet spot: easy parking, cool sand and the most relaxed crowd. Summer weekend mornings and evenings get busy with families, joggers and other dogs.

Grab a bite at the Sandy Kiosk on the way out, or extend the day at the Royal Avenue Reserve Dog Off Leash Area just up the hill.
