Royal Avenue Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Royal Avenue Reserve is a large open sports oval in Sandringham that doubles as an off-leash space, a flat, grassed run ringed by trees beside the tennis centre. It is a straightforward big-space option for dogs that want room to stretch out.

The rules. Dogs can be off-leash under effective voice control, but there are clear on-leash zones: the car park, within 20 metres of the playground and picnic areas, and whenever the oval is in use for organised sport or training. Dogs must be registered and tagged, a maximum of four dogs per person applies, and dogs must not rush or jump at other people or dogs. Pick up after your dog and use the bins provided.

What's there. A car park on the west side off Royal Avenue, bench seating around the reserve, public bins, and a kiosk by the tennis courts with dog-friendly outdoor tables.

Getting there. 53 Royal Avenue, Sandringham. Park in the car park off Royal Avenue on the west side. It is a short walk from Sandringham Station, the end of the line, with buses along Bay Road nearby.

When to go. Weekend mornings are busiest, and the off-leash freedom drops away when organised sport is on, so weekday afternoons are the calmer, more reliable bet. Good for dogs that want a big open run rather than a fenced enclosure.
