Royal Avenue Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Royal Avenue Reserve at 53 Royal Avenue is a large open sports oval in Sandringham that doubles as an off-leash space: a flat, grassed run ringed by trees beside the tennis centre. It is the straightforward big-space option in the suburb, for dogs that want room to stretch out rather than obstacles and crowds.

The dog setup

Dogs can be off-leash under effective voice control, but the on-leash zones are clearly drawn: the car park, anywhere within 20 metres of the playground and picnic areas, and the entire oval whenever organised sport or training is in progress. Bayside also requires dogs to be registered and tagged, caps handlers at four dogs each, and expects dogs not to rush or jump at other people or dogs. Pick up after your dog and use the bins provided.

A car park sits on the west side off Royal Avenue, with bench seating around the reserve and public bins. The kiosk by the tennis courts keeps dog-friendly outdoor tables, which is a tidy post-run finish without leaving the reserve.

Max: sports ovals give with one hand and take with the other. Check the fixtures before you go, because training nights turn the whole run on-lead.

Getting there and parking

The west-side car park off Royal Avenue is the main entry point, and street parking runs along the reserve. Sandringham village and station are an easy walk, so combining a train trip with a run works well, and the bay foreshore is minutes further on.

Worth knowing

The oval's sporting schedule is the single biggest variable: weekends in season can be entirely on-lead, while weekday mornings are usually empty and open. Tree cover around the ring gives more shade than most open reserves, though the oval centre stays exposed. As unfenced space, it rewards dogs with reliable recall and calm greetings at the boundary.
