Black Rock Beach Dog Off Leash Area

Black Rock Beach runs about 750 metres of narrow sand below the vegetated bluffs off Beach Road, with a sealed coastal path along the clifftop. It is a straightforward off-leash swim for bayside locals, and the seasonal rule changes are the thing to get right before you unclip.

Off-leash rules and hours

From 1 April to 31 October, dogs are off-leash at any hour under effective control. From 1 November to 31 March, the beach closes to dogs between 10:00am and 7:30pm, allows off-leash swimming from sunrise to 10:00am, and reverts to on-leash from 7:30pm to sunrise. Confirm the current times on the Bayside Council signage on site, because the summer window is enforced.

Dogs stay on-leash on the foreshore path at all times and within 10 metres of the playground, and marked wildlife protection areas along the shore are closed to dogs. The beach sits below roughly 20 metre bluffs, so low tide opens up noticeably more running room than high tide.

The water and what is there

The water is calm bay swimming, shallow for a long way out, which suits dogs who like to wade rather than dive. A water tap sits near the beach, and the clifftop above has a playground with a pirate-ship structure, picnic tables and barbecues for the humans in the group.

Max: the sealed path up top is a shared cyclist route and dogs must stay leashed on it, so keep a firm hold between the car park and the sand.

Getting there and parking

Access is off Beach Road, with ticketed parking in the clifftop car park opposite 308 Beach Road, metered roughly 8:00am to 8:00pm including public holidays. Buses along Balcombe Road and Beach Road link to Black Rock village if you would rather leave the car.

Make a day of it

Half Moon Bay sits just around the headland with its own off-leash area, and the Black Rock to Hampton coastal walk picks up the foreshore path if you want to add distance. For coffee afterwards, The Colonel's Son welcomes dogs at the outdoor tables.
