Black Rock to Hampton

The Bay Trail between Black Rock and Hampton is a coastal walk through Melbourne's bayside suburbs, running mostly flat from Black Rock Village to Hampton Pier via Half Moon Bay, Black Rock Beach, Sandringham Beach and Hampton Beach. It is roughly 4 to 4.5 km one way, so call it 8.4 km return, and allow 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace. Know before you go that the beach rules here are seasonal and time-based, and they change as you walk.

The dog setup

The route follows sealed footpaths above the sand with several ramps down to the beaches, so you can mix a firm walking surface with sandy detours as the tide allows. Expect about 45 minutes to an hour one way. The path is well used by cyclists and runners, and it narrows in places, so keep leads short through those sections.

Leash status

Bayside City Council manages the route. Dogs are on lead at all times on the Bay Trail footpaths themselves. The beaches below are where it gets complicated. In summer, from 1 November to 31 March, dogs are prohibited on the beaches from 10am to 7.30pm, with off-leash access on the designated beaches only between 7.30pm and 10am. In winter, from 1 April to 31 October, off-leash is permitted at all times on the designated beaches. Hampton Beach is closed to dogs altogether in summer, and dogs are banned at all times on the intertidal rock platforms within the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary just south. Dogs must also stay on lead within 20 metres of playgrounds and barbecue areas.

Max: Check the clock before you unclip the lead. The same stretch of sand can be off-lead one hour and banned the next.

Water and hazards

Water is well handled along this walk, with drinking fountains and dog bowls including near Sandringham Beach, plus waste bag dispensers and bins along the trail. The main hazards are traffic and sun: cyclists move fast on the shared path, and the exposed clifftop sections carry little shade at midday. Keep dogs off the rock platforms at all times, not just for the rules but because they are slick and sharp underfoot.

Getting there and parking

Black Rock Village end is easiest to reach, with parking near the shops and beach access down to Black Rock Beach. The Hampton end starts near Hampton Pier, with parking behind the Hampton foreshore. Bayside's bayside trail carries on from both ends: south towards Beaumaris and north towards Brighton, so this walk chains into a much longer day if you want it.

When to go

Summer mornings before 10am are the sweet spot: off-leash window on the designated beaches, cool sand and quiet paths. Winter gives you all-day beach access on the designated stretches. Weekday mornings beat weekends on both path and sand.
