Gasworks Arts Park sits on the site of a former gasworks in Albert Park, and its dog off-leash area is the local favourite for one reason: it is fully fenced. That makes it the go-to when you want your dog off the lead without worrying about roads, set within an easygoing arts precinct of galleries, studios and open lawn.

The rules. Dogs must be under effective control even inside the fenced enclosure, and on a lead when you pass through the surrounding arts precinct paths. Pick up after your dog straight away; bag dispensers and bins are provided. Dogs are not permitted inside the cafe building or near marked art installations.

What's there. Secure perimeter fencing around the main off-leash section, a dog water point, waste bags and bins, and bench seating for owners. The park is lit, which makes early morning and evening visits workable through winter.

Getting there. The park is at 214 Graham Street, Albert Park. Free two-hour parking is usually available on Graham Street, Richardson Street and the side streets around it. Tram routes 1 and 12 both stop within a short walk.

Watch-outs. It is a small, popular, enclosed space, so it fills with social dogs at peak times and can get muddy after heavy rain. If your dog is timid, that busy-enclosure dynamic is worth planning around.

A fenced yard is only as good as the gate. Check it has latched behind you before you unclip, especially when a few groups are coming and going at once.

Nearby with the dogs. The on-site Gasworks Cafe has dog-friendly outdoor seating. For more room to roam, Albert Park's off-leash lawns are close by, and Misuzu's on Victoria Avenue does footpath dining.

When to go. Mid-morning on a weekday or the middle of the day on weekends is quietest. Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 11, and weekday evenings after 5, are the social peaks. Good for confident dogs that enjoy company and for anyone who needs the security of a fence.
