Gasworks Arts Park Dog Off Leash Area

Gasworks Arts Park in Albert Park pairs its off-leash lawn with something no ordinary dog park has: galleries, studios and two theatres on the site of a former gasworks. The dog area is open parkland rather than a fenced run, so it suits dogs with steady recall who want company.

Off-leash rules

The City of Port Phillip designates the park's open green space as an off-leash area, with dogs kept under effective voice or hand-signal control at all times. Dogs must stay on-lead and at least 5 metres clear of the playground and BBQ areas, and temporary works for the park's ongoing upgrades can shift access, so read the signage on the day.

Pick up after your dog straight away and use the bins provided, and keep your dog off the paths where the arts precinct crowds pass through during events.

Max: This is not a fenced yard, so it is a control test as much as a play session. Pick the middle of the lawn away from Pickles Street and recall practice becomes part of the outing.

What's there

You get open lawn, mature trees, paved paths and a coastal-themed bush trail through native plantings, with public toilets, benches and picnic tables around the grounds. Waste bins sit around the park, and the site stays busy but easygoing, especially on farmers-market and theatre days.

Getting there and parking

The park sits on Graham Street, Albert Park, with free street parking on Graham and Richardson Streets subject to posted limits. Tram routes 1 and 12 both stop within a short walk.

Make a day of it

The on-site Gasworks Cafe puts dogs at its outdoor tables with water bowls and house-made dog treats, which makes the whole visit one stop. For more room to roam, the Albert Park Lake loop is minutes away on-lead, the Albert Park off-leash lawns add space, and Halcyon Days and Misuzu's extend the dog-friendly tables along Victoria Avenue.
