Garden City Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Garden City Reserve is a large, quiet local park at 47 Beacon Road, Port Melbourne, with an off-leash area in its southern section. It is a grassed, tree-shaded reserve with a community feel, split so the northern end with the playground stays on-leash and the open southern lawns are where dogs run free.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash in the designated southern area and must be under effective control. Keep dogs at least 5 metres clear of the playground, which sits in the on-leash northern section. Follow the signage, as penalties apply.

What is there. Open lawns with plenty of shade trees, bench seating, and a flying fox in the northern play section for use during daylight. It is a land park, so there is no water frontage and no tidal considerations.

Getting there. On-street parking is available on Beacon Road and the surrounding streets, though signage and time limits vary, so check before you leave the car. The 109 tram along the Port Melbourne corridor is within reach, with the reserve accessible from the Williamstown Road side.

Nearby with the dogs. The Beacon Cove promenade is close by, with a few cafes offering dog-friendly outdoor tables.

When to go. It is generally calmest midweek, with Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons the quietest. It picks up on Thursday and Friday evenings and across the weekend. Good for a relaxed run away from the busier foreshore.
