Garden City Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Garden City Reserve is a leafy, grassed local park on Beacon Road in Port Melbourne, and its southern lawns are a designated off-lead area under City of Port Phillip rules. It is the calm alternative to the foreshore: no water frontage, no crowds of tourists, just big shade trees and room for a dog to run with the neighbourhood regulars.

The dog setup

The reserve is zoned. The southern section is off-lead, as long as your dog stays under effective control; the northern section around the playground stays on-lead at all times, and dogs must keep 5 metres clear of the play equipment. There is no fence, so control means control. Read the signage on arrival because the council does enforce the boundaries, and carry bags as bins are not a given.

Max: the zoning is one line on the ground, not a fence. Half the park is on-lead, so know which half you are standing in before you unclip.

Worth knowing

Mature trees throw real shade across the lawns, benches line the walking paths, and the northern play section has a flying fox and climbing structures that make it a good split decision for households with kids and dogs. It is a land park through and through, so there are no tide or swell considerations, just grass and time.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 47 Beacon Road, with street parking on Beacon Road and Crichton Avenue, noting time limits vary so check the signs. The 109 tram corridor through Port Melbourne is within reach on foot from the Williamstown Road side, and Beacon Cove is a short walk east.

While you're out there

For water time after the lawns, Port Melbourne Dog Beach is a short drive back towards the foreshore, and the Bay Trail from Port Melbourne to Mordialloc runs on-lead walking along the water. Howe Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is another off-lead option closer to the bay.
