Howe Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Howe Reserve is a narrow, urban off-leash strip in Port Melbourne, running south of the light-rail tracks near Ingles Street. It is a linear grass reserve popular with locals and commuters, with 24/7 off-leash access across the whole space, which makes it a handy stop rather than a destination run.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies throughout, under effective voice control at all times. The reserve is only partly fenced and sits close to Ingles Street, so reliable recall matters more here than at most parks. Keep clear of the bocce court when it is in use, stay five metres clear of any playground or barbecue areas under council rules, and clean up promptly since there are no bag dispensers to lean on.

Facilities are simple: water taps, bench seating for owners and the bocce court that gives the reserve its local character. There are no public toilets on site. The narrow shape means a game of fetch becomes a down-and-back drill, which actually suits dogs with a good retrieve.

Max: short strip, sharp recall required. I do sprints up and down while my human pretends this counts as their exercise too.

The tram line along the reserve's northern edge sets the soundtrack, and most local dogs graduate to ignoring it within a visit or two. New dogs that fixate on the trams do better at the southern end, where the roar fades and the bocce crowd becomes the main distraction.

Worth knowing

Morning and evening commuter traffic is the rhythm here: locals swing by before and after work, and the reserve empties mid-morning. If your dog bolts or reacts to trams and traffic, keep the lead on near the street edge and treat the southern end as the calmer zone.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits near the corner of Ingles Street and Station Street, with street parking usually available along Station Street. The 109 tram is a short walk away, which makes this one of the easiest off-leash stops in the city to reach without a car.
