The Warmies Dog Off Leash Area

The Warmies Dog Off Leash Area is a large, fully fenced grass paddock on the Newport waterfront, at the end of The Strand near The Spit Reserve. The draw is simple: secure fencing plus open space plus bay views, so a high-energy dog can run flat out while you keep an eye on the water. It runs off-leash inside the fence any time of day.

The rules. Dogs can be off-leash inside the fenced enclosure, but must be leashed in the car park and along the adjoining Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail. You need voice control and eyes on your dog at all times, and you must pick up after them. Bring your own bags, as supply here is not reliable.

What's there. The ground is mostly flat, grassed, with a few shady patches and bench seating for owners. Facilities are minimal otherwise, so pack your own water, especially in summer. There is free parking directly at the site.

Getting there. By car, come in via Douglas Parade and turn onto The Strand; it sits close to the West Gate Freeway. Newport Station is the nearest train stop but it is a solid walk or short ride away, easiest along the bay trail. Cyclists and walkers can reach it directly on the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail from Newport or Williamstown.

Watch-outs. The site is exposed, so it gets cold and windy through winter. At low tide the adjacent water can turn muddy and a bit smelly; check a Port Phillip Bay tide chart if you want your dog paddling clean.

Quietest on Tuesday mornings and Friday evenings; Saturday and Sunday mornings and weekday late afternoons are the social peak. Good for confident runners and dogs who love a busy, sociable pack.
