The Warmies Dog Off Leash Area

The Warmies Dog Off Leash Area is a large, fully fenced grass paddock on the Newport waterfront at the end of The Strand, next to The Spit Reserve. The pitch is simple: secure fencing, room for a high-energy dog to run flat out, and bay views while you wait. The council lists it as open around the clock, seven days.

The dog setup

Off-leash rules apply inside the fence only. Dogs go back on lead in the car park, on the access paths and along the adjoining Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail. You need eyes on your dog and effective voice control throughout, and you must pick up after them; bag supply here is not reliable, so bring your own.

Inside the enclosure the ground is mostly flat and grassed with a few shady patches and benches for owners. Facilities are otherwise minimal: no water, no toilets at the fence line, so pack your own water, especially through summer. Rabbits share the site, which delights some dogs and winds up others, and fishing lines near the water's edge are worth a scan before you release a sniffer.

The vibe

Locals use it daily and the crowd is friendly, but the site is exposed, so it cuts cold and windy through winter. At low tide the adjacent shallows turn muddy and a little whiffy; check a Port Phillip Bay tide chart if a paddle is on the agenda. The upside is the outlook, with city views across the water.

Getting there and parking

Come in via Douglas Parade and turn onto The Strand; free parking sits directly at the site, close off the West Gate Freeway. Newport station is the nearest train stop but it is a solid walk away, easiest along the bay trail. Cyclists and walkers can arrive directly on the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail from Newport or Williamstown.

Close by with the dogs

Newport Park Fenced Dog Park is a smaller fenced yard back towards the shops, and Newport Lakes Park Dog Off Leash Area adds a bushland walk. For a swim rather than a run, the Altona Beach Dog Off Leash Arena is a short drive west.
