Altona Dog Beach

Altona Dog Beach at Seaholme is a long stretch of sand and shallow water off Simmons Drive, run by Hobsons Bay City Council as a 24/7 off-leash beach year-round, with a seasonal daytime ban on the sand over summer. The shallow, calm water makes it a regular pick for dogs still learning to swim, and the free gravel car park along Simmons Drive keeps the sand within easy reach.

Leash status

Dogs can be off-leash around the clock provided they are under effective voice control, but the off-leash zone runs specifically between Romawi and Mount Streets. From 1 November to 30 April, dogs are banned from the sand between 10am and 9.30pm, so summer visits need to be early morning or evening. Outside the mapped zone, dogs stay on-leash in the surrounding council reserve, and waste has to be picked up and binned.

Pepsi: low tide is the best time if your dog loves to splash rather than swim. The sandbar stays shallow for ages, so even nervous waders get confident fast.

Water and terrain

Port Phillip Bay water here is famously shallow and calm, with no surf to manage. At low tide the water pulls back to reveal a wide, shallow sandbar that gives dogs far more room to run, while a high tide narrows the usable beach and feels tighter. The set-up suits a full morning out rather than a quick stop, and the profile works for dogs of any confidence level, from puddle-waders to strong swimmers.

Getting there and parking

Drive via Civic Parade into Bladin Street or Millers Road, then Wackett Street, parking along Simmons Drive. Seaholme Station is about a 10 to 15 minute walk away, and dogs are allowed on Metro trains if leashed, carried or muzzled, which makes a train-and-walk visit realistic if you would rather skip parking.

Worth knowing

The car park area has dog wash stations for rinsing sandy paws before the drive home, public toilets near the beach access point and water taps for thirsty dogs. Weekend mornings between roughly 9am and 11am are the busiest stretch; a weekday morning or late afternoon in summer is the easiest way to get the beach mostly to yourselves.

While you're out there

Baci's Coffee, the weekend coffee van on the Esplanade, is an easy stop before or after the beach. If your dog prefers a secure run, the PA Burns Reserve fenced dog park sits right beside the beach, and the Altona Beach dog off-leash area covers the main beach further along. The Hobsons Bay coastal trail links the whole foreshore for an on-leash warm-up.
