Gloucester Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Gloucester Reserve is an open grassed reserve on The Esplanade in Williamstown, right on the waterfront with bay and city skyline views. Hobsons Bay City Council lists the whole park as an unrestricted off-leash area, and it links by the coastal path to the larger Cyril Curtain Reserve, so it works as one end of a longer seaside dog walk.

The dog setup

Dogs may run off-leash across the entire reserve, but they must stay in sight and return immediately when called. The moment you step off the reserve onto surrounding footpaths, roads or the beach sections outside the zone, the lead goes back on. Waste must be collected straight away and binned, and all dogs over three months old need current registration. Greyhounds must stay leashed at all times, even inside the off-leash boundary. This is council land, so read the on-site signs on the day in case settings change.

Worth knowing

The reserve sits above a rocky shoreline rather than a swimming beach, so there is no easy water access for dogs here. On hot days, bring water and plan a swim stop elsewhere. The exposed bayside position also means it is breezy, which is welcome in summer and less so on a cold south-westerly.

Max: no fence here, just open bayfront grass. Fine for dogs with solid recall, and the waterfront path towards Cyril Curtain Reserve turns it into a proper hour-long outing.

Getting there

The reserve fronts The Esplanade near Williamstown Beach station, with street parking along the Esplanade and nearby side streets. North Williamstown and Williamstown stations are both within walking distance, and the reserve is about 25 minutes by car from the CBD off-route via the West Gate Freeway.

Make a day of it

Cyril Curtain Reserve Dog Off Leash Area continues the off-leash run along the coast, and the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail stretches it further towards Altona. The Kiosk by d'Asporto is an easy coffee stop on the Esplanade, and Port Melbourne Dog Beach is down the bay for a swim.
