Altona Beach Dog Off Leash Arena

The off-leash dog beach on the Altona foreshore sits at the western end of the bay, where the sand meets Altona Coastal Park beside P A Burns Reserve, near the Altona Sports Club and the Pines Scout Camp. It is a shallow-water beach rather than a surf beach: the bay shelves so gently that a dog can wade a long way out, and when the tide drops the exposed flats open into a huge wet-sand running field. For paddlers, swimmers and fetch dogs alike, this is one of the best dog beaches on the bayside side of Melbourne.

Leash status

Under Hobsons Bay City Council rules, the Burns Reserve area running from Altona Road to the bay is an unrestricted off-leash location, meaning off-leash applies around the clock, every day of the year, with your dog under effective voice control. Paths run from the fenced reserve down to the sand. Two boundaries matter: the adjoining Altona Coastal Park is on-leash outside the fenced area, and the main beach between Romawi and Mount Streets further east is a different regime entirely, with dogs banned from 10am to 9:30pm between 1 November and 30 April and on-leash the rest of the time. Carry a lead regardless, and keep clear of the cricket oval and the fenced conservation plantings between the reserve and the water.

Water and terrain

The water is calm, shallow and gently shelving, which makes it forgiving for small dogs, nervous swimmers and older dogs who just want a wade. At high tide the sandy strip narrows; at low tide the flats expand into the park's best asset, so checking the tide before you go genuinely changes the visit. The bottom is soft sand with none of the rock or weed you find on the ocean side of the bay.

Getting there and parking

Free parking sits in the large car park outside the Pines Scout Camp, close to the dog wash stations and the paths down to the beach. Seaholme station is the nearest train stop for the western end, and the beach is an easy walk from Altona's Pier Street strip for those making a morning of it. Worth knowing

The facilities are better than most dog beaches: dog wash stations and a drinking fountain next to the car park, waste-bag dispensers and bins through the reserve, and grass ovals inside the fenced area for a dry-land run before or after the swim. Council registration tags are expected, droppings must go straight in the bins, and the on-lead rule in the wider coastal park is enforced to protect birdlife, so keep the clip on between the fence and the sand.

When to go

Because the area is unrestricted, early mornings are yours: locals walk it at dawn year-round and the flats at low tide in the first hours of daylight are the best combination the beach offers. Weekend middays in summer bring the biggest crowds, so if space matters, come early or time the visit to an afternoon low tide.
