A shallow, sandy off-leash stretch on Port Phillip Bay, tucked between Romawi Street and Mount Street on the Altona foreshore. The draw is the water: it stays shin-deep a long way out, so it suits dogs who like to paddle rather than swim, and it drains to a wide sand flat at low tide. The catch is the seasonal clock, so read the rules before you plan a summer visit.

The rules. Timing depends on the season, set by Hobsons Bay City Council. From 1 November to 30 April, dogs are off-leash only between 7.30pm and 10am, and are banned from the sand entirely between 10am and 7.30pm. From 1 May to 31 October it is off-leash around the clock. Note that the adjacent Bay Trail West shared path is on-leash year-round, even when the sand is open, so clip on before you leave the beach. Keep your dog in sight and under control, and pick up after them.

The water and terrain. Very shallow and gently shelving, which makes it forgiving for nervous swimmers and small dogs. Low tide opens up the most running room on the exposed flats, while high tide narrows the usable sand and bunches everyone together.

What's there. Dog-friendly taps for a drink and a sand rinse, waste-bag dispensers (bring a spare, they run low), and beach access points along the seawall.

Getting there. Free parking sits along the beach-side road near Apex Park. Seaholme Station is the closest train stop, a short walk to the western end of the beach.

Nearby with the dogs. The Pier Street strip and the Esplanade cafes are a short walk for a post-beach coffee, and the Bay Trail West runs right past for a longer on-leash stroll.

In summer the beach is closed to dogs through the middle of the day, so the crowd lands right on the 7.30pm opening. Come at dawn on a winter weekday if you want the sand to yourselves.

Best at low tide on a weekday morning, or in the winter months when the timing rules lift. Good for paddlers and cautious swimmers rather than deep-water dogs.
