Hosken Reserve Dog Off Leash Area sits at 483 Blackshaws Road, Altona North, alongside the Kororoit Creek Trail. It is open to off-leash dogs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with newer amenities including a dog-bowl drinking fountain and picnic shelter.

The rules. Off-leash access applies at all times, but dogs must be under effective voice or hand control throughout. A lead is required within 15 metres of the playground, any organised sporting ground, and the BBQ area, and dogs are not permitted inside the playground itself. Confirm current signage on-site, as council rules can be updated.

What's there. The reserve is only partially fenced, separated from the adjoining bike path but open in places near the creek, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than nervous escape artists. On site you'll find a drinking fountain with a dog bowl, seating, a picnic shelter, BBQs and public toilets. Bins are provided but bring your own poo bags as backup.

Getting there. There's dedicated parking off Blackshaws Road, including accessible parking. Bus routes run along Blackshaws Road, and the nearest train stations are Newport or Spotswood, followed by a short bus ride.

the creek-side stretch isn't fully fenced, so keep an eye on the boundary near the water and the road if your dog tends to wander.

Nearby with the dogs. Birdcage Altona Cafe and Vince and Me, both in nearby Altona, have outdoor seating that welcomes dogs. Pet-friendly accommodation is easier to find around Williamstown or Altona than right at the reserve.

Weekend mornings and Friday afternoons draw the biggest crowds. For a quieter lap, aim for a weekday morning or later in the evening.
