Newport Lakes Park Dog Off Leash Area

Newport Lakes Park is a natural bushland reserve off Bruce Street, and its off-leash zone is a grassy clearing in the northwest known locally as The Paddock. This is a recall park rather than a fenced one: the payoff is shade, trees and quiet, but your dog needs to come when called because there is no fence between the run and the rest of the reserve.

The dog setup

Dogs are off-leash only in The Paddock. Everywhere else in the park, including the walking tracks around the lakes, they must stay on lead, and the eastern conservation areas around the water are closed to dogs entirely to protect the birdlife. Water taps and waste bins sit around the off-leash zone, with bins and bags provided for clean-up.

Mature trees give genuine natural shade, which is rare at an off-leash site, and there are benches around the perimeter plus unpaved tracks through the reserve. Public toilets are near the main picnic area and car park entry.

Worth knowing

Voice control is required even inside the off-leash zone, and snakes can be active in the warmer months around the bush edges.

Max: no fence and ducks on the water nearby. If your dog has any prey drive, keep it leashed until you are well inside The Paddock and away from the conservation lakes.

The vibe

Busiest early mornings and late afternoons with local regulars, quieter on weekdays. The clearing is large enough to give a nervous dog space from the pack, and the setting suits dogs with reliable recall who prefer a calmer, shadier run than an open waterfront.

The address is 18 Bruce Street, Newport, with free street parking along Bruce Street and an off-street car park via Lakes Drive. It is within walking distance of Newport Station on the Werribee and Williamstown lines: enter through the Bruce Street gates and head northwest for The Paddock.

Close by with the dogs

If your dog wants fences rather than recall games, the Newport Park Fenced Dog Park and Francis St Fully Fenced Dog Park are both nearby, and The Warmies adds a riverfront option. For coffee after, Odd Spot Cafe is a short drive back towards town.
