Newport Lakes Park Dog Off Leash Area

Newport Lakes Park is a natural bushland reserve off Bruce Street, and its off-leash zone is a grassy clearing in the northwest known locally as The Paddock. This is a recall park, not a fenced one: the payoff is shade, trees and quiet, but your dog needs to come when called because there is no fence between the run and the rest of the reserve.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash only in The Paddock. Everywhere else in the park, including the walking tracks around the lakes, they must be on-leash. The lake and conservation areas on the eastern side are closed to dogs entirely to protect the birdlife, so keep well clear of the water. Voice control is required even inside the off-leash zone, and bins and bags are provided for clean-up.

What's there. Mature trees give genuine natural shade, which is rare at an off-leash site. There are benches around the perimeter, unpaved walking tracks through the reserve, and public toilets over at the main picnic area.

Getting there. The address is 18 Bruce Street, Newport, with free street parking along Bruce Street and park access from there. It is within walking distance of Newport Station on the Werribee and Williamstown lines. Enter through the Bruce Street gates and head to the northwest section for The Paddock.

Busiest early mornings and late afternoons with local regulars, quieter on weekdays. The area is large enough to give a nervous dog space from the pack. Best suited to dogs with reliable recall who enjoy a calmer, shadier setting than an open waterfront.
