Jimmy The Van

Jimmy The Van trades out of the Climb West Melbourne bouldering gym at 193 Maidstone Street, Altona, serving barista coffee, toasties and bagels to climbers and locals alike. It is a grab-and-go stop with all the seating outdoors, which makes it an easy coffee run with the dog attached.

The dog setup

The venue is dog friendly but it is inside a climbing gym, so house rules apply: dogs on a short lead at all times and clear of the black safety mats. Order at the van and settle at the outdoor tables, and bring a portable bowl since water bowls are put out often but not always.

Worth knowing

The van pours proper espresso alongside hot chocolates, smoothies and quick snacks, and it is geared to fuel sessions at the gym rather than host long brunches. It is a community stop, so expect climbers coming and going rather than a quiet cafe room.

Pepsi: treat this as a waypoint, not a destination. Coffee in hand, dog at heel, then straight on to the beach or the trail.

Getting there and parking

There is plenty of street parking along Maidstone Street and the surrounding commercial strip, and Altona and Seaholme stations are each a walk away. The Bay Trail West shared path passes close, so it slots neatly into a walking route.

While you are out there

The Altona Beach Dog Off Leash Arena is a short drive or an active walk away for a proper run, and the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail from Williamstown to Altona links the two. Bezirk Cafe near the foreshore is the sit-down alternative with water bowls out.
