Doug Grant Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

A large, grassy off-leash reserve on Queen Street in Altona, with water views and 24/7 access. It is mostly fenced with double-gated airlock entries, which makes it a genuinely social spot without the escape risk of an open field, and the space is big enough to give a shy dog room to peel away from the pack.

The rules. Off-leash any time of day, with dogs required to be under effective voice control. It is fenced on most sides but not all, so keep an eye on the perimeter, particularly the north edge where there are gaps toward the shared path and cyclists. Dogs must go back on-leash in the adjoining Apex Park to the east and the Truganina Explosives Reserve to the west. Clean up after your dog, as bags are not always stocked on-site.

What's there. A water tap for the dogs, bench seating, rubbish bins, and free parking along Queen Street and in the reserve's north-east corner. Lenny's Pup Shop van sometimes trades here on weekends.

Getting there. Drive in via Queen Street, right beside the western end of Apex Park. Altona Station on the Werribee line is a short distance away.

Watch-outs. This is a coastal reserve, so snakes can turn up along the path in the warmer months. Keep dogs off the surrounding on-leash conservation areas.

Nearby with the dogs. The dog-friendly cafes on the Pier Street strip are a short drive, and the coastal path from the reserve makes an easy add-on walk.

Best on a weekday morning for a quieter run, or a weekend if your dog thrives on company. Good for social dogs and confident runners.
