P A Burns Reserve Fenced Dog Park sits at the end of Prospect Road in Altona, a fully fenced off-leash enclosure that opens onto the sand of the Altona dog beach. The combination is the whole point: a secure grassed run with double-gate entries, then a short walk down to shallow water, so a run and a swim happen in one stop.

The dog setup

The enclosure is fully fenced with double-gated airlock entries, internal walking paths and established native plantings, all redeveloped by Hobsons Bay City Council in recent years. Off-leash applies around the clock inside the fence and on the adjoining beach. Outside those zones the rules tighten: dogs stay on-lead through the surrounding coastal reserve, the cricket oval is off-limits entirely, and the signed conservation plantings protecting shorebirds are strictly no-go.

The vibe

Open grass with natural rocks and logs to scramble over, backing onto a shallow, gently shelving beach that suits paddlers more than strong swimmers. The tide flattens out wide at low tide and pushes dogs closer to the path at high tide. It is a local crowd rather than a destination queue, busiest on sunny weekend afternoons.

Max: leads stay on all the way from the car park to the beach gate. Nothing unclips until you are through the airlock or out on open sand.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Prospect Road near Altona Coastal Park, with a paved car park at the beach entry including accessible spaces. Altona Station on the Werribee line is a moderate walk or a short drive away. The car park fills fast on sunny afternoons and weekends, so come early or be prepared to walk in from the residential streets.

Worth knowing

Amenities are better than most beach-side parks: dog wash stations for sandy paws, drinking fountains with bowls, bin and bag dispensers, seating and public toilets nearby. This is natural coastal country, so keep an eye out for snakes through the warmer months, and keep dogs on the established grass and sand rather than letting them dig in disturbed ground.

The sand continues around the corner at Altona Dog Beach Parking in Seaholme, and Doug Grant Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is the inland alternative. Salt n Pepa Cafe in Altona does a coffee stop on the drive home.
