A fully fenced coastal dog park at the end of Prospect Road, Altona, that opens straight onto the sandy Altona dog beach. The combination is the draw: a secure grassed enclosure for a run, then a gate through to shallow off-leash water, so you get both a safe play space and a swim in one stop.
The rules. Off-leash 24/7 inside the fenced area and on the adjoining beach, with double-gate airlock entries at the enclosure. Dogs must be on-leash in the carpark, on the paths down to the beach, and through the surrounding coastal reserve. The cricket oval is off-limits to dogs, and there are signed native replanting zones to keep clear of.
The water and terrain. Large open grass with natural rocks and logs for scrambling, backing onto a shallow, gently shelving beach that suits paddlers and cautious swimmers.
What's there. A paved carpark at the beach entry, fresh drinking water and bowls, beach showers to rinse off sand and salt, and public toilets nearby. Concrete paths lead down toward the sand.
Getting there. Access via Prospect Road, near Altona Coastal Park. Altona Station on the Werribee line is a moderate walk or short drive. The carpark fills fast on sunny afternoons and weekends, so arrive early or be ready to walk in from the residential streets.
Watch-outs. This is a natural coastal environment, so watch for snakes in the warmer months. Some sources note historic asbestos concerns in the broader area, so keep dogs on the established grass and sand rather than digging in disturbed ground.

Best before 9am or on a weekday to beat the carpark crush. Good for dogs who want a run and a shallow swim in the same trip.
