Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail: Williamstown to Altona

The Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail runs about 13.4 km along the shoreline between Williamstown and Altona, west of Melbourne, and it is one of the city's better long on leash walks with a dog. The catch worth knowing upfront: parts of the coast it passes, including a section of Altona Coastal Park, are off limits to dogs entirely, so read the signage where the path meets each reserve.

The walk

The full one way stretch is 13.4 km, flat and paved the whole way, taking roughly two and a half to three hours, with shorter options of about 6.5 to 8.3 km depending on your start and finish. You pass Williamstown Beach, the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary and Altona Coastal Park, with bay and city skyline views peaking around Point Gellibrand.

Expect company. This is a shared path busy with walkers, runners and cyclists, so a short lead works better than a long line.

Leash status

Dogs must be on lead on the main coastal path, and Hobsons Bay City Council runs Altona Coastal Park as a strictly on lead conservation reserve protecting shorebird habitat. Within that park there is also a signed area where dogs are not permitted at all, beside the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary and sensitive saltmarsh, so check the boundary signs at the entrance rather than guessing.

On the beaches, council rules prohibit dogs on Williamstown Beach and the main Altona Beach stretch between 10am and 9.30pm from 1 November to 30 April, with on lead rules applying outside those hours. For genuine off lead time, step off the path at Altona Dog Beach in P.A. Burns Reserve or at Cyril Curtain Reserve and Gloucester Reserve in Williamstown.

Water and watch outs

The bay here is shallow and the tide pulls out a long way, leaving tidal flats for dogs that are permitted on that stretch to potter on at low tide. P.A. Burns Reserve has bag dispensers, bins and a dog water point, and drinking fountains sit along the path.

Watch for snakes in the shrubbier sections through the warmer months, and note the path is fully exposed with little shade for long stretches, so pick a cool morning or an overcast day in summer.

Getting there

Start near Williamstown Beach station, join mid route at Newport station, or finish at Seaholme or Altona station, which makes a one way walk with a train ride back easy. There is parking near Williamstown Beach and at both P.A. Burns Reserve and Altona Coastal Park, with public toilets along the route, though facilities thin out in places.

While you're out there

Finish at the P A Burns Reserve fenced dog park for off lead time right on the foreshore, or start the day at the Cyril Curtain Reserve off leash area before joining the trail. When to go

Weekends get busy, so weekdays, early mornings and late afternoons are far quieter. Sunrise and sunset give the best light with the least traffic, and the sea breeze makes it tolerable even in summer if you start early.
