Williamstown Coastal Loop

The Williamstown Coastal Loop is a flat 5.3km circuit taking in Williamstown Beach, Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park, Cyril Curtain Reserve and the Williamstown Botanic Gardens, with Port Phillip Bay on one side and the Melbourne skyline across the water. AllTrails grades it easy, about an hour to an hour and a half. The deciding fact is seasonal: part of Williamstown Beach closes to dogs through the warm months.

The walk. Paved or well-kept gravel the whole way and flat throughout, which makes it a sensible choice for an older dog or one still building fitness. It is a loop, so there is no backtracking and no car shuffle.

The rules. Parks Victoria manages Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park and confirms dogs are welcome on lead, and dogs must stay on lead along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail generally. On Williamstown Beach, dogs are banned between the Life Saving Club and Sebastian Beach Grill from 10am to 9:30pm, 1 November to 30 April. Outside those hours and dates, on-lead dogs are fine on the sand. Keep dogs leashed near the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary to protect shorebirds. Cyril Curtain Reserve, by contrast, is a designated off-leash area.

Water. Drinking fountains are spaced along the coastal trail, and there are public toilets near Williamstown Beach and inside the heritage park. Point Gellibrand has picnic tables and free barbecues if you want to make a morning of it.

Getting there. By train, take the Werribee line to Newport, change to the Williamstown line and get off at Williamstown Beach Station, then walk through the underpass to the sand. Nearby with the dogs. Extend the walk along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail to Altona, let the dog off lead at Cyril Curtain Reserve or Gloucester Reserve, then stop at The Kiosk by d'Asporto on the Esplanade or Crowded House on Ferguson Street.

When to go. Mornings, because the wind picks up through the afternoon. Sunny weekends between 10am and 1pm are the busiest stretch, so a 6am or 7am weekday start buys you quiet paths and easy parking. Good for seniors and anyone after a low-effort walk with a big view.
