Williamstown Coastal Loop

The Williamstown Coastal Loop is a flat 5.3km circuit on Port Phillip Bay, taking in Williamstown Beach, Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park, Cyril Curtain Reserve and the Williamstown Botanic Gardens, with the Melbourne skyline sitting across the water the whole way. AllTrails grades it easy and figures about an hour to an hour and a half at a steady pace. It is a loop, so there is no backtracking and no car shuffle.

The surface is paved or well-kept gravel the entire way and flat throughout, which makes it a sensible pick for an older dog or one still building fitness after surgery or a quiet winter. Pram wheels and mobility scooters manage fine too, so the whole family can come.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome on lead for the circuit. Parks Victoria manages Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park and confirms dogs on lead are fine there, and leashes are the rule along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail generally. The one seasonal wrinkle is the beach itself: the stretch between the Life Saving Club and Sebastian Beach Grill bans dogs from 10am to 9:30pm between 1 November and 30 April. Outside those hours and dates, on-lead dogs are welcome on the sand, so a summer beach walk means going early or late. Keep your dog close on lead near the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary, where shorebirds nest.

Water and facilities

Drinking fountains are spaced along the coastal trail, and there are public toilets near Williamstown Beach and inside the heritage park. Point Gellibrand has picnic tables and free barbecues if you want to turn the walk into a full morning. The bay itself is right there for a dog who likes a paddle, outside the summer beach ban hours.

Getting there and parking

By train, take the Werribee line to Newport, change to the Williamstown line and get off at Williamstown Beach Station, then walk through the underpass to the sand. By car, parking is paid at the beach west end car park and along the Esplanade; early weekday mornings are the easiest time to find a spot. Park details live with Parks Victoria.

Worth knowing

The wind is the main hazard. It picks up through the afternoon and can make the exposed western sections hard work for small dogs, so mornings are calmer in every sense. Sunny weekends between 10am and 1pm are the busiest stretch; a 6am or 7am weekday start buys quiet paths and easy parking. If your dog needs a proper run off lead, Cyril Curtain Reserve is a designated off-leash area right on the route.

Close by with the dogs

Extend the day by following the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail toward Altona, or bookend the walk with off-lead time at Cyril Curtain Reserve or Gloucester Reserve on the Esplanade. For coffee afterwards, The Kiosk by d'Asporto sits right on the Esplanade and Crowded House is a short hop away on Ferguson Street.
