Albert Park Lake

Albert Park Lake is a flat 5 km sealed circuit around the water, three kilometres south of the Melbourne CBD, with the skyline across the lake for most of the lap. The deciding fact for dog owners: Parks Victoria manages the park and the lake circuit is on lead, so this is a walk rather than a run unless you find the signed off-lead zones.

Leash status

Dogs stay on lead around the lake circuit and the walking tracks, with the lake water and all playgrounds off limits outright. The park does have designated off-lead areas in the surrounding parkland, including space near the Albert Road side and the Aughtie Drive sports areas when not in use, and the boundaries are signed rather than obvious, so read the sign at your entry point.

Access changes during major events: the Australian Grand Prix closes much of the perimeter each autumn, and the park can be off the table for normal walks for weeks around the build.

The walk

Allow an hour at a steady pace on a wide, flat, shared path used by commuting cyclists, running groups and prams, and it never fully empties. Shade is thin along the exposed western side, which matters from late spring on.

Max: three sides of this park are busy road. Queens Road and Aughtie Drive run close to the path in places, so if your dog startles sideways there is nowhere good to go. Lead on, and short.

Water and hazards

Drinking fountains with dog bowls sit near the main car parks and path junctions, but the lake itself is not for swimming, and the waterbirds plus the resident rakali are reason enough to keep a dog out of the shallows.

Getting there

Tram 96 and route 12 run along Fitzroy Street and route 1 along St Kilda Road, each a short walk from the park edge. Driving means metered parking on Queens Road or Albert Road, or longer-stay parking near the aquatic centre and Lakeside Stadium.

While you're out there

Halcyon Days on Montague Street is the closest dog-tolerant coffee at the north end, and Albert Park Dog Off Leash Area marks the designated run if the lap has to earn its coffee. Gasworks Arts Park Dog Off Leash Area adds a second option beside the park's northern corner.
