Albert Park Lake

Albert Park Lake gives you a flat 5 km circuit on sealed path, three kilometres from the centre of Melbourne, with the city skyline across the water for most of it. The deciding fact for dog owners is that the lake circuit itself is on-lead, and the park closes to normal access around the Australian Grand Prix.

The walk. Five kilometres, flat, sealed and busy. AllTrails times it at about an hour at a steady pace. The path is shared with commuting cyclists, running clubs and prams, and it never really empties, so this suits a dog that reads other dogs well rather than one that needs space. Shade is thin on the exposed western side.

The rules. Parks Victoria manages Albert Park, and dogs are on lead around the lake circuit and the walking tracks. The park also has designated off-lead areas in the surrounding parkland, away from the lake edge and clear of the sporting fields. They are signed, and the boundary shifts as you move around the park, so read the sign rather than assuming. Dogs stay out of the water and out of the fenced playgrounds. Access is restricted during the Australian Grand Prix and other major events, when road closures take in much of the perimeter.

Water. Drinking fountains with dog bowls sit near the main car parks and path junctions. The lake is not a swimming spot for dogs, and the water birds and the resident rakali are reason enough to keep off the edge.

Getting there. Trams 12 and 96 run down Fitzroy Street and route 1 down St Kilda Road, all within a short walk of the park edge. Driving means metered street parking on Queens Road or Albert Road, or the longer-stay parking near the aquatic centre and Lakeside Stadium.

Nearby with the dogs. Halcyon Days is the closest coffee, with Hector's Corner and Jack the Geezer a little further into Middle Park. Eastern Reserve Dog Park is the nearest place to let a lead off properly.

When to go. Early on a weekday morning, before the running groups and the commuter bikes. Summer afternoons are hot and shadeless on the open stretches. Check the Grand Prix dates before you plan anything in March. Good for seniors: flat, sealed, and never far from a bench.
