Fawkner Park Dog Off Leash Area

Dog Flat is the local name for the off-leash run on the western and southern sides of Fawkner Park in South Yarra, a short tram ride south of the Melbourne CBD. Wide lawns, mature shade trees and a dependable regular crowd make it one of the inner south's most used off-leash meet-ups.

How the off-leash zoning works

Dogs can go off-leash along the western side of the park and on the southern side south of Cordner Oval, under City of Stonnington rules. The rest of the park stays on-leash, including playgrounds, barbecue areas and the central fenced zones, and a small dog-prohibited zone sits near the children's and sports areas.

This is open parkland rather than an enclosure, so reliable recall matters. Carry a lead at all times, keep your dog within sight, and stay off the ovals whenever organised sport is running.

Max: The zones are not fenced, so know which side of Cordner Oval you are on before you unclip. South of it is the run, north of it is a fine.

What's there

Water taps with dog bowls sit at several points through the park, with waste bins along the main paths and public toilets on site. The old trees throw real shade, which counts for a lot on hot afternoons.

Getting there and parking

The park address is 24 to 88 Commercial Road, South Yarra, with trams along Commercial Road and Domain Road stopping at the edges and South Yarra Station about a 15 minute walk away. Free street parking runs along Pasley Street and Park Lane, though it fills early on weekends.

Close by with the dogs

If your dog needs a fully fenced space, the Thomas Oval Fenced Dog Park at Como Park is the nearby secure option, and the Como Park off-leash area adds lawns beside the Yarra.

For an on-leash leg stretch, the Albert Park Lake loop is a short drive north.
