Dog Flat is the off-leash run on the western and southern sides of Fawkner Park, South Yarra, a short tram ride south of the Melbourne CBD. Wide lawns, mature shade trees and a steady stream of regulars make it one of the inner-south's reliable off-leash meet-ups, busiest in the late afternoon.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash on the western and southern sides of the park, south of Cordner Oval. The rest of the park, including playgrounds, barbecue areas and the central fenced zones, is on-leash. The City of Melbourne requires dogs to be under effective control, so they should recall on command and you must carry a leash. Clean up after your dog and use the bins at the entries.

What's there. Drinking fountains with dog bowls sit along the main paths, with waste bins at entry points, plenty of benches and picnic tables, and public toilets in the park. Shade is genuinely good here thanks to the old trees, which matters on hot afternoons.

Getting there. The address is 24-88 Commercial Rd, South Yarra. Trams on Commercial Road and Domain Road stop along the park edges, and it is roughly a 15-minute walk from South Yarra Station. Free street parking runs along Pasley Street and Park Lane but fills on weekends, so arrive early or plan to walk in.

When to go. Weekday afternoons from about 4pm to 6pm are the social peak, with a regular crowd around 4:30pm to 5:30pm. Saturday mid-morning is also busy. For a quieter run, come mid-morning on a weekday.

If your dog finds a big pack overwhelming, walk the quieter eastern paths on-leash first and read the crowd before letting them off.
