Como Park Dog Off Leash Area

The short version. Como Park is a stretch of City of Stonnington riverside parkland off Alexandra Avenue in South Yarra, running along the Yarra with mature trees, walking paths and open lawn. Its dedicated fenced dog park (Thomas Oval) sits at the southern end, but the wider park also carries off-leash access, so you can walk the river and let the dog run without driving anywhere else.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted only in the designated areas - the fenced Thomas Oval and the marked off-leash zones. Elsewhere in Como Park, including Como Park North, dogs must be on-leash, so carry a lead and clip up when you move out of the marked zone. Keep dogs off garden beds, playgrounds and any sports oval during scheduled training or matches. Bags and bins are provided; pick up straight away.

What is there. Drinking fountains with dog bowls, sealed pathways, shade from established trees, and nearby BBQ areas and a basketball half-court. The fenced Thomas Oval next door adds a secure option with separate active and quiet zones if the open parkland feels too exposed for your dog.

Getting there. The address is Alexandra Avenue, South Yarra. Street parking along Alexandra Avenue is limited, especially on weekends. Chapel Street tram stops and South Yarra Station are both a short walk, and the Capital City walking and cycling trail runs directly through, so it links easily into a longer river loop.

When to go. Busiest weekday mornings and evenings and on weekends between about 9am and 4pm. For quieter conditions, aim for before 8am on a weekday or after 5pm. Stick to daylight along the river. Good for pairing a scenic on-leash walk with a secure off-leash run.
