Fawkner Park Off-Leash Area

The short version. Fawkner Park is a large City of Melbourne park between Toorak Road West and Commercial Road, on the South Yarra side near the Royal Botanic Gardens. Its off-leash access sits in the central open parkland - flat, wide grassed avenues under mature elms - so it suits dogs that already have a solid recall and want room to stretch out rather than a fenced enclosure.

The rules. Off-leash is limited to the designated central areas; the perimeter paths (including along the Domain Road side) are on-leash, as is the space within 10 metres of playgrounds and BBQs. This is an unfenced park bordered by busy roads, so effective voice control matters - if the recall is not reliable, keep the lead on. Bag dispensers are provided and you must pick up. Check the on-site City of Melbourne signage for any temporary changes.

What is there. Dog-friendly water fountains, waste-bag stations and bins at entry points, plenty of bench seating around the off-leash lawns, and heavy shade from the mature tree lines in summer. It is open, social parkland rather than an agility setup.

Getting there. The park sits off Pasley Street, South Yarra. Metered street parking is available on surrounding streets and fills fast. The 58 tram (Domain Road) and 8 tram (Toorak Road) both drop nearby, and it is a short walk from South Yarra Station and the Botanic Gardens.

When to go. Busiest weekday mornings and evenings and on weekends from about 10am to 3pm, when it is genuinely social. For a shy dog, mid-morning or late afternoon on a weekday is calmer. Good for big runners with reliable recall who want open space, not a small enclosure.
