Victoria Gardens Dog Off Leash Area

Victoria Gardens is a heritage-listed Stonnington park at 52 Murray Street, Prahran, and its off-leash area is the central sunken oval. The steep grassy banks around it do the work a fence would normally do, which is why locals rate this small park for a contained run in the middle of the city.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies only inside the sunken oval. Everywhere else, including the winding paths, elevated garden beds and peripheral lawns, is on-lead, and the fenced children's playground is off limits to dogs entirely. City of Stonnington requires effective voice or hand control, a carried leash, and immediate clean-up. Fresh water taps for dogs, benches, public toilets and big heritage plane trees for shade round out the facilities.

The honest caveat: the banks contain most dogs, but they are not a fence. A strong runner or an enthusiastic digger can get up and over, so if recall is a work in progress, keep the lead on until you have seen how your dog handles the open oval.

The vibe

The gardens have a proper neighbourhood feel, with mature trees, shaded benches and a regular dog crowd rather than passers-through. Weekday mornings, early evenings and weekends are busiest; the middle of the day goes quiet, which suits nervous dogs best. If your dog needs wide-open space rather than a social oval, the bigger reserves nearby cover that, and this one works well as the local leg-stretch.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Murray Street, though the inner-city reality is that trams are easier. High Street tram routes stop right beside the gardens, and Prahran Station is a 15 to 20 minute walk. Between Chapel Street, Prahran Market and the surrounding shopping strips, this is a park you can slot into a day out without ever moving a car.

Close by with the dogs

Two other off-leash reserves sit within Prahran: Orrong Romanis Reserve for a bigger run and Lumley Gardens nearby. For coffee, Aura Espresso Bar is an easy stop, and the Mount Erica Hotel on High Street is the classic post-walk pub.
