Lumley Gardens Off-Leash Area

Lumley Gardens, at 21 Jessamine Avenue, is a quiet 24-hour off-leash park in the leafy residential pocket of Prahran between High Street and Dandenong Road. Victorian and Edwardian homes ring the perimeter, the lawns are thick and green, and big mature trees throw real shade. It is a well-loved local spot for socialising dogs, training sessions and the occasional picnic, and it rarely feels frantic.

The dog setup

Dogs may be off-leash in the designated area, but the park is only partially fenced, so this is a recall ground rather than an enclosed run. Stonnington's rules apply: your dog stays under effective control and returns when called, you carry a leash at all times, and outside the off-leash zone the council limit is a maximum 3 metre lead with no more than four dogs per walker. Dogs are not permitted in the children's playground, which is separately fenced. Pick up after your dog; bags and bins are provided.

Facilities are simple but solid: open grass for running, benches, a BBQ area, a fenced playground for the kids, and a wheelchair-accessible entrance.

Worth knowing

Because the boundaries open onto quiet residential streets, a dog that bolts is the one thing to manage here. Locals report the busiest stretches are weekend middays and around Wednesday and Friday evenings, while Monday mornings and weekday afternoons are the calm windows, which suits a timid dog best.

Getting there and parking

Street parking sits on Jessamine Avenue and the surrounding residential streets. Trams along High Street and Dandenong Road both put you within a short walk, which makes this an easy car-free stop.

Fourth Chapter on High Street, right by Victoria Gardens, is the local dog-cafe legend with outdoor tables and dog treats on the counter.
