Lumley Gardens is a quiet 24-hour off-leash park at 21 Jessamine Avenue, Prahran, ringed by Victorian and Edwardian homes. It is a well-loved local spot with lush lawns and big mature trees for shade, used for socialising, training and picnics.

The rules. Dogs may be off-leash in the designated area but must be under effective control and return when called. Outside that area, the Stonnington on-lead limit is a maximum 3 metre leash, and a person may walk no more than four dogs at once. Dogs are not permitted in the playground. Pick up after your dog; bags and bins are provided.

What's there. Open grassy space for running, a fenced children's playground, a BBQ area, and benches. The entrance is wheelchair accessible. Note the park is only partially fenced, so it is not a fully enclosed run.

Getting there. Street parking sits on the surrounding residential streets such as Jessamine Avenue. The park sits between High Street and Dandenong Road, so trams along those routes get you close.

Nearby with the dogs. Fourth Chapter on High Street is a highly rated dog-friendly cafe with outdoor seating and handmade dog treats, and several other High Street cafes take dogs at their outdoor tables.

When to go. It is busier on weekends and around Wednesday and Friday evenings into the following mornings. Monday mornings and weekday afternoons are the calmest, best for a timid dog.
