Alma Park West

Alma Park West is the Windsor side of the park split by the Sandringham rail cutting, a well-kept garden space with mature elms, volcanic rock edging and shaded open lawns. The off-leash zone west of the central path is what draws the dog walkers: room to socialise in a quiet, community-focused setting open around the clock.

The dog setup

The primary off-leash area sits west of the central path, with dogs on-lead on all paths, near the playground and on the eastern side of the rail cutting. City of Port Phillip rules also keep dogs at least five metres clear of playgrounds, BBQs and picnic setups. There is no full fence here, so effective control matters, and with a popular local crowd it pays to read the room before unclipping.

The vibe

Friendly dogs, casual walks and quiet corners are what visitors consistently call out. The mature canopy keeps the off-leash section usable through warm afternoons, and the tree-lined paved paths suit a slower circuit with an older dog. Weekday mornings and evenings belong to regulars; weekends bring a broader mix.

Max: the on-lead rule on paths is clearly signed, but the boundary near the rail cutting can catch you out. Clip on before you cross the central path.

Getting there and parking

The address is Alma Road, Windsor VIC 3181, with Windsor station one block away on the Sandringham line. Tram 5 or 64 runs along Dandenong Road and the 78 route along Chapel Street if you are coming by public transport. Street parking is available in the surrounding streets, though time limits and permit zones apply, so check the signage.

Worth knowing

Free electric BBQs and picnic tables sit in the park zones, and public restrooms are available near the Alma Park East adventure playground on the far side of the cutting. Water fountains are generally working for dogs but carry a backup supply in summer.

Close by with the dogs

Across the rail line, the Alma Park East Dog Off Leash Area is the sister zone, and Victoria Gardens Dog Off Leash Area in Prahran is a short drive north. Coin Laundry Cafe in Armadale works as a coffee stop on the way back.
