Alma Park East Dog Off Leash Area

Alma Park East is the off-leash side of Alma Park, split from the busier west side by the Sandringham train line, with a good stretch of open lawn for a proper run.

The rules. The off-leash area is the northern section of the park, between the sports oval and Dandenong Road. Dogs need to go back on the leash within about 5 metres of the playground, BBQs and picnic areas, and must stay under effective voice or hand control and in sight at all times.

What's there. Open lawn under mature trees, walking paths for a leashed stroll through the rest of the park, and waste bins near the entrances. It isn't fenced from the surrounding streets, so keep an eye on traffic-adjacent boundaries with a less reliable dog.

Getting there. By train, it's a short walk from Windsor Station on the Sandringham line, crossing Dandenong Road to enter from the northern side. Trams 3/3a, 5, 16, 64, 78 and 79 run along Dandenong Road and Chapel Street nearby. By car, street parking is available on Westbury Street, Alma Road and surrounding streets, so check the signage.

Nearby with the dogs. Phoenician Cafe on Westbury Street has an outdoor deck that welcomes dogs and is an easy stroll from the park. Neighbours Cafe on Chapel Street also has a dog-friendly backyard with shade.

Weekday mornings before work and weekend mornings between 8am and 11am are the busiest windows. For a quieter run, aim for a weekday midday or late-afternoon visit.
