Dame Nellie Melba Memorial Park Dog Off Leash Area

Dame Nellie Melba Memorial Park is a small, quiet corner park at 104 Coppin Street, Richmond, bordered by Hoddle Street and North Terrace. It is a convenient local spot for a quick off-leash run rather than a destination, with mature trees and good shade over the lawns.

The rules. The off-leash areas are the two triangles: the main one along North Terrace and a smaller one along Hoddle Street. Dogs must stay within voice or hand control of you, on-leash within 20 metres of the playground, and on-leash within 20 metres of the shared cycling paths. If organised sport is on, dogs go back on the lead. Clean up straight away.

What's there. A drinking fountain, several shaded seats, waste bins, and solid tree cover. It is a compact space, so it can feel full fast when a few larger dogs turn up at once.

Getting there. Street parking on Coppin Street is limited. Trams run close by on Victoria Street and Church Street, and it is a short walk from either Burnley or Richmond Station.

Nearby with the dogs. Richmond is well set up for a coffee after: dog-friendly footpath cafes cluster on Swan Street and Bridge Road, and there are dog-friendly beer gardens on Victoria Street and Church Street.

Weekday mid-morning and early afternoon are the quiet windows. Mornings before 9am and the after-work 4 to 6pm run are the busiest.
