Citizens Park Recreation Reserve

Citizens Park is Richmond's largest park, bounded by Church Street, Highett Street and Gleadell Street, and its central sports oval doubles as off-leash space whenever no game or training is booked. Add a fenced off-leash section and dog drinking water, and it is one of the more flexible dog spaces in the inner east: a secure option when the oval is out, a big open run when it is not.

The dog setup

On the oval, Yarra City Council allows off-leash only when the ground is not in use for approved sport, matches or organised training, and dogs must stay under effective voice or hand control. On-lead rules cover the rest: stay leashed within 10 metres of the sporting ground during events and training, within 10 metres of the playground, and never take a dog into the playground itself. Keep clear of any temporary fencing around turf repair, and carry bags for cleanup, with bins provided around the park.

Max: the oval's off-leash status flips the moment sport is scheduled. Fresh line markings or a team arriving means leash up; the fenced section is the safer bet on busy weekends.

Worth knowing

The park has public toilets near the playground, shaded benches, barbecue areas, accessible entrances and parking. Weekday mornings and weekday evenings outside training hours are quietest, while Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons are the busiest shifts. Check the council's seasonal fixture times before heading down if your dog needs the open oval rather than the fenced yard.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking runs along Highett and Gleadell Streets. The Route 30 tram stops on Church Street, and the park is a short walk from East Richmond or Richmond stations, which makes it easy to reach without a car from most of inner Melbourne.

While you're out there

Bridge Road and Swan Street are a few blocks away with plenty of dog-friendly pavement seating, and Richmond Reading Room is the neighbourhood coffee stop. The National Hotel on Victoria Street welcomes dogs in its beer garden, and for a different kind of dog lunch Footlong Dogs is a hot-dog bar with outdoor seating. For another run, Barkly Gardens offers a bigger unfenced oval a short walk east.
