Victoria Park Fenced Dog Off Leash Area occupies the old Collingwood Football Club home ground in Abbotsford, now a secure grassed oval run by Yarra City Council. Solid fencing, a big flat surface and a railway station beside the boundary make it one of the better enclosed dog spaces in inner Melbourne, especially for dogs that need room to run without a road anywhere near.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies on the oval only when it is not booked for sport. VFL matches, training sessions and community events take priority, and dogs go back on lead whenever the ground is in use. The fence is genuine but the oval has several gates, so check them behind you, and effective voice control is expected even inside. Everywhere else in the park, including the area near the criterium cycling track, stays on-lead.

The vibe

A big open field with a regular inner-city crowd: the topics visitors raise are dog socialisation, friendly people and easy access, and the old spectator terraces give owners somewhere to sit above the oval. Weekday evenings between 5pm and 7pm and weekend mornings are the busy windows. For a young or nervous dog, mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday is the quiet option, though the oval surface itself is largely unshaded on hot days.

Max: the fence is reassuring, but confirm the oval is not booked before you unclip. A mid-week training session means lead-only, and an open gate is the real risk here, not the boundary.

Getting there and parking

Entry is near the corner of Lulie and Abbot Streets, Abbotsford 3067, with Victoria Park Railway Station sitting right alongside. The Capital City Trail passes nearby for anyone arriving on foot or by bike. Free four-hour street parking rings the park but fills quickly on event days.

Worth knowing

Water taps with bowls, bins and bag dispensers are on site, and the terraces provide the shade the oval lacks. Check the council's Victoria Park page if you are visiting during major weekend sports slots, since bookings decide whether the oval is available to dogs at all.

Close by with the dogs

The Farm Cafe at the Collingwood Children's Farm is a short walk for on-lead outdoor seating, and the Main Yarra Trail runs out of the park towards the city, covered in our Abbotsford to Royal Botanic Gardens route.
