Abbotsford to Royal Botanic Gardens via Main Yarra Trail

This is the 11.6 kilometre riverside walk from Abbotsford down the Main Yarra Trail to the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the detail most walkers get wrong is that dogs are welcome at both ends. Leashed dogs may enter Melbourne Gardens during normal opening hours, which is not the usual rule for a botanic garden.

Leash status

On-lead the whole way along the Main Yarra Trail, a shared path carrying heavy commuter cycling traffic, so a short lead and a dog that holds its line matter. At the far end, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria regulations allow dogs in Melbourne Gardens during opening hours provided they are restrained on a lead, with mess picked up and removed. Dogs are not permitted in the Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden, inside buildings, or at ticketed events such as Lightscape, where only trained service animals may enter.

Water and terrain

The route is graded easy, flat and mostly sealed, tracing the river past Abbotsford Convent, Dights Falls, the Yarra Bend bushland and the Richmond boathouses before reaching Alexandra Gardens. Expect two and a half to three hours one way. The Yarra sits beside you for most of it, but bank access is steep and water quality drops badly after rain, so carry water rather than counting on the river. Bubblers and toilets sit at Studley Park Boathouse and in Alexandra Gardens.

Pepsi: Yarra Bend is where the off-lead zones live. If your dog needs a proper run rather than a long leashed march, break the walk there for twenty minutes before carrying on.

Getting there and parking

Start at Trenerry Crescent or the Gipps Street bridge in Abbotsford. Collingwood and Victoria Park stations sit close to the northern end, and most walkers treat this as a point-to-point, catching a train or tram back from the city end rather than doubling the distance.

Hazards

The shared path is the main one: commuter cyclists move fast, particularly on weekday mornings and evenings, and sightlines are short in the bushier Yarra Bend sections. Snakes turn up along the river through the warmer months, and the flying fox colony near Yarra Bend is a reason to keep dogs close rather than sniffing around the banks.

When to go

Weekday mornings are quietest on the path; weekends stay busy with cyclists and runners all day. In summer, start early, since long stretches have no shade, and skip the river edge for a day or two after heavy rain.

While you're out there

The Victoria Park Fenced Dog Off Leash Area near the start is the place for a secure run before the long lead walk, and Flockhart Reserve Dog Off Leash Area offers a shorter off-lead stretch by the water. The Farm Cafe at the Children's Farm makes a good on-lead coffee stop near the trailhead.
