Flockhart Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Flockhart Reserve is a quiet, bush-style off-leash area at the end of Flockhart Street, Abbotsford, sitting right on the Yarra with direct access to the Main Yarra Trail. It is 24/7 off-leash and suits dogs that like to sniff and explore in a calmer setting than the busier Yarra reserves. The catch is that it is unfenced, and both a river and a shared bike path border it.

The rules. Off-leash 24 hours, seven days, under effective voice control (Yarra City Council). It is not fenced, and it runs alongside the Main Yarra Trail bike path and the river, so recall matters. Dogs go on lead within 10 metres of any playground, barbecue or public event, and must stay out of the adjacent wetlands and garden beds to protect wildlife.

The terrain. Natural open bushland with scattered tree cover and a paved trail alongside for a longer walk or run. After heavy rain the lower paths near the river turn muddy, so expect a wet dog.

What's there. Drinking fountains with dog bowls, picnic tables and barbecues. Shade is natural and patchy rather than built.

Getting there. Limited parking at the cul-de-sac end of Flockhart Street. The 109 tram stops on Victoria Street a short walk away (Stop 22, Burnley Street), and the reserve is easy to reach along the Main Yarra Trail.

When to go. Quietest mid-morning on weekdays. Weekday mornings, early evenings and sunny weekends bring both dogs and trail traffic. Good for confident, trail-savvy dogs; less ideal for a dog with shaky recall given the open river and bike path.
